I don't  think I got the guts, or skills, to start modding it myself :)

I've been through the whole 'boutique wah' thing.  The BEST imo was the modded wah I got from Stuart Castledine (www.wah-wah.co.uk)

What did you get him to do?  I've been eyeing his site for a long time, as I've got an old Thomas Organ Crybaby which used to sound great but which now sounds very, very sick (and not in a good way).  I think the pots are, basically, screwed.

Being technically hopeless, I have no intention of screwing around with replacing them myself. :) But if I'm going to try to get this bloke to do the repair, I'm thinking about trying to jazz me ol' wah up in other ways (it already has a true bypass mod in it).  Hard to say how I might want to change the sound, since it's just been sitting in a closet for 6 or 7 years since its tone went to hell, but perhaps some added fiddly knobs for tweaking the Q, the sweep?

Anyway, what kind of mods did you get?  How did they work out?

I told Stuart I wanted a 'thick' wah tone - very old school Hendrix and 'that' croak.  he winds his own inductors so you can get them tweaked to taste.  He sent me the PCB with the inductor installed and I just installed it into a spare Wah case I had.

Your old Thomas Organ wah will most likely just need repaired rather than modded - should be able to resurrect that baby, they are the benchmark wah tone.

Yeah, I bought it second-hand for relatively cheap (like USD 60-80 or something) when I was just starting out and scarecely appreciated how good it sounded until it died and I replaced it for general use with a new off-the-shelf wah.  I mean, the new one (a JH-1) sounds OK, but just doesn't quite have that responsiveness and tone that you really look for in a wah ....

Right, this weekend I've got to haul out the old T.Organ, dust it off and take a look at it, and send an email to Stuart! :)

I am also a Wah Virgin and spent last weekend testing a number of different models.

The one I finaly went with was the Dunlop CryBaby Classic which had a good vintage vibe and sounded good clean and distorted.  It was close between this and the Budda Wah, I liked the Budda just as much but the Dunlop was £35 cheaper so that won the day.

I would normally offer to fix it for you myself but Stuart is THE wah man on these shores.

I have a wah cry baby original, and the sound is too vintage and muddy, I think to buy a morley, for a more modern and cold sound.

Hmm, have you (or has anyone) got a contact email for Stuart?  I tried contacting him through the form on the wah-wah.co.uk web site, but it just coughed and died with a CGI error, so I haven't been able to get through. :P

ok these are the best!

www.realmccoycustom.com get the RMC3! very expensive but it's hand made, noiseless, true bypass and has the richest, fattest, sweetest wha sound you've ever heard man. I'm still in awe after I bought one, it was worth every penny, mine cost me £192 including postage, but it sounds nicer than anything out there.

This is a handmade wha pedal made by Geoffrey Teese, who is a wha expert and modded whas for people like Frank Zappa and Stevie Ray Vaughn back in the day.

The company is called Real Mc-coy Custom, hence RMC.

trust me or not trust me cos someone is only gonna try n tell u otherwise, but it's deception. Dont listen to poeple who try and tell you cry baby are the best, because they havent tried them all and I have. So I'm telling you through a lot of experience mate.

This is only my opinion though.

later,

Ben.

I like what I've heard of the Teese wahs -- I think the Wizard wah would do me, if I had the cash handy.  That said, I'd just as soon get me ol' Thomas wah repaired, though I haven't had much luck contacting Stuart Castledine.  Maybe it's just the holiday season, or maybe he's dropped off the face of the earth .....  :?

Quick warning - If you are looking for something with a big sweep; i.e a big tonal variation through the movement of the pedal, then avoid the Morley Mark Tremonti model, the sweep is really narrow.

The Dunlop Zakk Wylde model has a massive sweep. Just depends what you're after really.
