String gauges...

Would it damage the guitar to have 10's on the EAD strings and 9's on the GBE strings?

Like hybrids... but the other way around...

it'd be like... 10-42... i guess.

Just something i want to try after changing back to 9's. :)

Better to be safe than sorry! heh

No harm would be done, in fact that is the exact set that Telecaster master Jerry Donahue uses. Also Rickenbacker guitars sell that combination as the 'correct' set for their six string guitars. If you go onto :

www.stringsdirect.co.uk/

and look under Rickenbacker strings, you will see that a Rickenbacker six string set runs:

10,13,17,24,32,42.

I have tried that combination on my longer scale guitars (Fenders) and it is a very nice combination. It especially sounds nice and clear on the Telecaster. I only changed back to 10-46 on Fenders because whilst I prefer 10 tops, I like to use readily available sets.

You may even like to consider the F150 set, still available from Dean markley and possibly GHS strings. That set runs:

10,13,15,26,30,38.

If moving away from 10-46 I prefered the balanced sound of 10-42s on Fenders though. On Gibsons I like the equal sonic/tension string balance across  the neck that a 10-52 set offers, due to the shorter scale length.

Regards,

FF.

Thanks a lot FF, thats exactly what i was after :) thought you might know...

at £7.99 it's a bit much, rickenbackers on an ibanez? haha... that'd go down a treat.

Buying the strings individually (Earnie Ball's) is only 5.85... smart shopping eh!

Same ammount that i pay now. Awesome.

So i'm going for 10, 12, 16, 24, 32, 42, should be spot on... cheers!

sorry about the thread hijack, but i have another question, on the topic of string gauges, so this is a thread recycle!

would Light top Heavy bottom 10 13 17 30 42 52 be best for drop D playing?

thanks

Should be fine mate, i use 10 - 52's in standard tuning and occasionally tune the E to D and the tension is still good.

I use 10's with a 49 on the low E  for drop D gives me nice even tensoin over all the strings. I find 10-52's A & D strings feel like they have too much tension compared to the rest imo.

Just for fun, I will tell you that my custom gauge strings that I will be using soon will got from a 10-60's since i will be tuning A#,F,A#,F,A#,F. Its so low, i will be recording with the tuning soon, i'll let you know how evil it sounds :)

Amazing!

That tuning does seem a bit evil.    I like it. Reminds of the open C Messugah uses (C.G,C,G,C,E) On 7 strings it's (G.C.G,C,G,C,E). Devin wants and eight string to add another  low G.

I put 10's on the top 3 strings and 9's on the bottom on my Tokai. Dont think it will do any harm, but the tension change from D to G is weird, so Ill move properly onto 10's next time restring. It does make chord changes like going from D to Dsus (?) by swopping the F# for a G with your pinky a lot clearer though, especially with lots of fuzz.

Well, the strings have come... they're bloody quick.

What i ordered was basically one 10 string(high E), one 9 1/2 (B) and the rest are straight 9's.

I'll be putting them on when my new pickup arrives...
