Your right actually,
The edge indeed is based on the Floyd, it's just been developed by Ibanez into a recognised item name in it's own right. Ibanez have also produced some let us say not so successful variations of the floyd bridge too, but because it says Edge in it theyre still purchased.
The more interesting Ibanez bridge is the ZR on the S Series, though it definately feels different to the Floyd based ones. it's real nice though I don't know if Ibanez bought the design in or not.
The issue with liscensed floyds is, down to the build and material quality of each mfgr. Certainly the Schaller units are good enough for mortals like us.
Look at the company Wilkinson, they do inexpensive and reasionable quality guitar hardware (for the most part), yet boutique makers proudly proclaim that they use Wilkinson hardware.
You pay £2K for a guitar with the same bridge (& tuners) as a £300 quid guitar, how does that work. Simple it's not the name it's a reliable design and decent materials.
Don't critisise it because it's not an OFR, critisise the makers of poor quality versions.
Rob..
