Opeth style recording with Mules and Laney (updated)

Yeah, if you're boosting bass you have to add more treble and prescence or it gets too mushy.  There's so much bass on my Klipp heads that at lower volumes you can't put the bass over 6 and have a clear tone.

Fine when you crank it though, just like a Plexi

Ok I updated it, the tones a bit more modern and aggressive now, and the cleans sound a bit nicer (mic'ed up my Fender and used the neck Mule):

Actually I quite like the tone though I see where folks are coming from. If Laneys are now like this, they sound a lot better than when I tried them out(many moons ago...don't ask how many..). I know the problems I've had mic-ing, to be honest, which is why I generally give up the ghost and go for modelling. Nice one Tom...I like the fact that you always keep at it and refine where you think it's needed.
It's sometimes said on recording forums: "never monitor using headphones": I'd qualify that by adding "unless you have to and there's other people to take into consideration"! I'll use them to see where I'm at and trawl through the many takes I have to do to get things sounding decent, yet when it comes to mixing, I find that one needs air+speakers to get a truer reference. As flat as manufacturers say their phones are, as a guitarist I never quite trust them...just my tuppenceworth.
I get the feeling/intuition that the Laney will be a true, released and galloping racehorse with volume at 11 btw :)

Yeah, mic'ing is a bit of a pain in the arse sometimes but it really sounds much better than my v-amp for recording, although that is good for late night practise and quick clips. Main problem with mic'ing amp is that it needs to be pretty loud to get a good tone, not sure the neighbours appreciate it :P

I might be interested in getting a Tonelab some time though, as the clips I've heard of it are really good. As for headphones, well I just cant afford a mixer and a set of decent monitors so was hoping headphones would do, plus I could use them for other stuff such as late night practise, listening to music etc.

The Laney IS a beast when cranked  Really cant get the sound I'm hearing in the room through a single mic.

2 things.
 1 - More Distortion
2 - More Sustain(maybe more distortion?) on the lead session.

haha JP the problem is (at least with my cab) that with the gain any higher than 7/8 it gets mushy and not tight enough. I'll try it with an overdrive in front some time to tighten it up a bit, hopefully it'll have enough distortion for you then

Seriously WFD, if you ever get to meet any Death Metal bands who you like the tone of look at how much gain is on their amps and I promise you that it will not be very high. The sounds becomes to grainy with my gain.

Tom, cool clip man! Really coming along in recording and writing! Nice one.

Not at all. Its just i see your comments on peoples clips and you think that to get a heavier tone you need more gain. You well get more definition and clarity with slightly less distortion, but with the poweramp section of your amp turned up very loud, and you will get a tighter more defined sound. Try it out sometime.

Great again _tom_!

There's a quick shot of PG's GH100L on his new DVD, the settings are:

Resonance switch down,
Presence 10
Bass 3
Mid 4.5
Treble 4
Master 1 (maybe he needs a hotplate too!)
Gain 10
... But there's no pic of the Drive setting..
I'd  be interested to see how this works in your setup.
