Cool,
What and how do you mod the 5150 ive had one for ages, but about 3 years ago it starting screaming at me, i took it to 3 diferent amp techs and none of them could sort it. So i bought a Dual rec, but then by chance i decided to change the 12ax7 tubes and it worked fine. If theres a mod for it i d def give it a go, but obviously wouldnt trust any of the guys Ive used in the past.
Does anyone know someone who could do this around the London/SE area?
Cheers
I certainly wouldn't take an amp back to any 'tech' that couldn't dignose a microphonic preamp valve. it's like valve amp tech 101 for beginners - ALWAYS check the valves first.
Changing preamp valves in a squeeling head is always the first port of call
It's a bit like changing the strings on a guitar that is acting up - always the first and cheapest option - and usually sorts out silly problems without the need for a tech
The 5150 was kind of based on the Soldano that Eddie had been using.
It is rumoured that Eddie's own 5150s were different - or modified
I recall haring that he had them fitted out with Sylvania 6CA7 valves - like an American EL34 equivalent, which is what he had usedin the old Marshall too.
