Cool,

What and how do you mod the 5150 ive had one for ages, but about 3 years ago it starting screaming at me, i took it to 3 diferent amp techs and none of them could sort it.  So i bought a Dual rec, but then by chance i decided to change the 12ax7 tubes and it worked fine.  If theres a mod for it i d def give it a go, but obviously wouldnt trust any of the guys Ive used in the past.

Does anyone know someone who could do this around the London/SE area?

Cheers

I certainly wouldn't take an amp back to any 'tech' that couldn't dignose a microphonic preamp valve.  it's like valve amp tech 101 for beginners - ALWAYS check the valves first.

Changing preamp valves in a squeeling head is always the first port of call
It's a bit like changing the strings on a guitar that is acting up - always the first and cheapest option - and usually sorts out silly problems without the need for a tech

The 5150 was kind of based on the Soldano that Eddie had been using.
It is rumoured that Eddie's own 5150s were different - or modified
I recall haring  that he had them fitted out with Sylvania 6CA7 valves - like an American EL34 equivalent, which is what he had usedin the old Marshall too.

From what i see its mainly us brits dissing the 5150/6505 range, simply on grounds of price comparrison between us and the states and yus the prices are horrible :-( but its no reason to bad mouth an amp.....surely its the tone that matters.

Im currently on order for a 6505+ which set me back £799 around $1600 how shocking is that? eek

But to add to the list.... machinehead, chimaira (upgraded to the 6505+  for the latest album) and children of bodom

Love those bands, you cant argue with their tones... lots of impact :-)

Il try to get some clips if my amp ever shows up, its been on order for months now, apparently peavey are having trouble supplying, bah.

I only ever badmouth the price. and maybe the "clean" channel.

yep, Eddie was using SLO100s for recording and apparently the 5150s Eddie used were just knockoffs of that amp.  doesn't make the 5150 a bad amp though, I actually prefer it to the SLO100.

the schematics for the SLO100 and the 5150 are quite different though, I wouldn't say Peavey copied the SLO100 at all for the production amp.

eddie always used big tube el34's, he always had all of his amps converted to use them... He had the 5150 built for him so that he could get the gain and tone of 2 marshalls daisychained, both set to 11... but at lower volumes.

anybody tried the new fender 5150?
my maxon OD 808 really DOES make poop sound good

hmm, nice tone - overdoing it on the squeels and harmonic feedback for my liking.  never heard Ed play since I bought F.U.C.K. but it doesn't really sound like him much, just reminds me of Satriani

Anyone know how the 6505 differs, if at all, from the 5150 :?:  I'm guessing it's pretty close to identical, but you never know.

I owned two 5150s and they both had bad power trannies. One died, I got it exchanged for a 2nd, brand new unit, and that one died a week afterward.

I was very disappointed.

According to our Peavey rep it's identical bar the name.

I've got a 96 5150 combo and with a tung sol in V1,and V2 and JJ's the rest of the way , even the clean is decent.
I run mine into a Marshal 1960AX top (greenbacks) and it sounds killer.

Scored it for $400.00 bucks on Ebay last year, mucho bang for the buck.  :D

jammy git

nice score though - I've seen the combos go cheap from time to time but I'm not into combos for metal (I'm a fully paid-up member of the 4x12 club).

bodoms 5150s have lee jackson mods

They would if they used 5150's.

They use Lee Jackson preamps with VHT poweramps. On something wild they used a Peavey 50/50 poweramp not a 5150 like everyone thinks they do.

I had a 5150 first version (it was one of the first in Germany actually) and to me - apart from the cleans - it's always been:
Tweaker's Paradise - Player's nightmare.
