Shotty Quality?

is it just me or has gibson really been falling short on thier quality control latley. i was up at GC trying out a 6505+ and i must have gone through every gibson in that place before giving up and grabbing a schecter.

the backs of the necks on most of the guitars i tried had a sandpaperish/unfinished feel to them around the neck joint. one was even sticky! sticky, like the finish hadnt even cured yet. the intonation was out on all of them, glue was running from underneath the frets, all kinds of shotty workmanship. i wouldnt have bought a single one of those guitars.

am i the only one whos noticed this? i own a gibson flying V from 04, albiet i did re-finish it myself and there is a bit of glue leakage that i cleaned up, but other than that it plays like a dream, and this is a guitar that cost $650 plus what i put into it to re-finish it and all that good stuff. the guitars im talking about range all the way from the les paul studios to the explorers and Vs to the $2500 gold-tops. i honestly will not buy a gibson again. when i get my explorer, im gonna have it custom built by legra or something.

anyways, am i crazy or is it my guitar center or is it really happening?

You're not the only one. There are plenty of Gibbo rants to be found on this forum.......and many others as well.

Sticky finish is quire common on Gibsons, it's probably the main reason why some players sand the neck down.

From what I've learned from browsing forums and other sources is that GC and other big chain stores may not be the best place to look for high quality guitars.

I used to associate Gibson with great quality, but the stuff they're making now is nowhere worth the amount of money they're charging.  If I were to buy a Gibson it would have to be at least 10 years old!

yeah...i am wary of gc/mus friend/etc.....i am lucky that i live so close to nashville plant-i have owned a few gibs in my day-no complaints, but i have always went thru dealer directly-find a crusty old dealer who has been down the road a few times...bet they have a few special phone numbers -you may have to wait, but you cut out the the middle-seems hard to escape problems in QC when you get sooo big/corporate-one thing I love about mesa boogie...can pick up the phone and call mike b., who has worked with them for 25 yrs..I have the same luck with gibson, but one of the locals has a dear friend who works in custom shop
-owned 2 flying v's,les paul Jr..2 customs..2 standards..sg custom ..j 200 custom shop--all top notch!
