pups for a Raised Fist -esque sound - (edit) happy customer!
« on: April 16, 2007, 06:45:49 PM »
Hi all,

I've been reading these forums for a few weeks now, and had good ol' search around trying to work out what's right for me, but I'm afraid I've only come out more confused than I was before!

                                  ---- What I have now -----

Ibanez RG490F - tuned to A-E-A-D-F#-B with gauge 13s. I don't know what wood the guitar is, but I think a lot of these Ibanez's are quite similar?

Zoom G2.1u

Randall RG200-G3 (200W "Valve-Dynamic" combo, 2x12" Celestion GT-12-100s)

(current pups are Ibanez INF2s)

                                    ---- What I'm after -----

The sound I'm aiming for is somewhere between Dimebag and the Raised Fist sound (if that makes any sense at all!) - I play hardcore/metal, very downtuned.

What I'm not entirely happy with at the minute is the lack of response in the very lowest notes. I'm after super-tight across the entire range.

What I do like, and wish to keep, is the absolutely superb sustain, and the extreme clarity of artificial harmonics and squeals (I use these a lot).

---- My questions and why I'm confused   -----

What pickups (bridge) would people recommend for me, based on the above info?

From what I gather, any of: ceramic WP, HD, MM or PK would be suitable - but what I can't work out which features of each one makes it more or less optimal than the others for my particular setup!

Any comments/suggestions very gratefully received, and thanks in advance!

Roo

It depends.

If all you want is more tightness than infinities and the same harmonic capabity (sustain isnt a property of pickups, thats in the guitar), then near any BK will give you far more tightness and far more clarity, highs and harmonics.

BK do it better.

But some BKs do some things better than other BKs.

The proverbial 'tight bass, tonnes of harmonics' pickup is the miracle man. I'd go with that.

Unless you can better describe your needs compared to common pickups? Gain level? EQing? Compression?

Miracle man is a great option, plus you will get great pinched harmonics!

when my Ceramic Warpig arrives, i can tell you how that is for the Dimebag sound, and i can tell you about it's tightness too. but from what i've heard, the Ceramic Warpig is the second tightest pickup.
also has huge bass and more output that than the MM.
anyone else, would the ceramic warpig be better for downtuned stuff than the MM?

hope this helps, dude

I have a ceramic pig, still have a miracle man (suped up; "The Blackening"), and had a normal miracle man.

In tightness its really, really close between the MM and cWP. Really close. I wouldnt like to say, since guitar and setup is a factor. But both have the edge in tightness on an 81 (though its STILL close, but the 81 is a very tight pickup).

The cWP is also very capable of harmonics, but theres a definate difference there with the MM. The MM has more. No doubt about it.

The MM has a smoother mid, and cWP a bigger, more grinding sound, even in the ceramic version. Vast, freight train, unstopable "Fuc!<-it-we-dont-need-a-bass-player" low end. Though the MMs no slouch there, either.

Because of the greater compression and mid push I'd say the cWP is better for dime. But I dont know who the other band are, and went on 'tight and harmonics'. Hence...any more guidelines?

Oh: I keep both The Blackening and the ceramic warpig in C# standard or drop B. They've been lower and lapped it right up. I've had a standard A5 warpig (less tight, but still FAR more than an infinity) down in A with measly 11-53 guage. Sounded an awefull lot like early mastodon! The notes were still very very much there, it wasnt as tight, obviously, but nothing was lost!

Many thanks for the replies.

Maybe I can clairfy on the points you raised: our band is currently a three-piece, the bassist plays with very bright active pickups on a 5-string with a decent trace eliot amp (don't know the exact details). We already have a ton of bass, but that's really the style we're after, so for me it's being able to tighten the bass up a lot, and give the best clarity on the lowest notes, which is currently where my guitar is failing.

Sounds from the responses, and the reading, that pretty much any BKP will be better than what I have - this much, at least, I know!

One question about the ceramic pigs. Some people have  inferred that the cleans might not be properly clean - others say that you can get a good ringing crystal clear clean tone - I presume part of this is to do with the guitar and how the pickups are set up too. Does anyone have experience of this? We have a couple of clean sections in between the "wall of noise" :)

Thanks again, and I hope to put in an order for something soon, you guys have already limited my choice to two best options, I guess I just have to decide between them now!

Cheers,

Roo

With the cWP if you play with much gain then try to back it off at the volume on the guitar, you'll never get a clean out of it.

However, its quite capable of them through a clean channel with plenty of headroom. The trifling matte of a footswitch.

The A5 WP is much the same.

The cleans are quite fantastic for such powerfull pickups, too.

Raised Fist! What an awesome band! Glad to know ONE person who knows them

For their sound you need a tight low end and a very bright sound. The amp should do the work. I say Miracle Man.

The A5 WP will have the better cleans in my opinion but the ceramic version should have the tighter bass response. It should be perfect for the kind of sound you're after but based on the harmonics you want I'd say the MM is a better choice. To me it's easily the tightest bss response of any BKP and should be plenty powerful enough.

your guitar is basswood.

and if you are wantig a soud similar to your other guitarists who use  active pickups get the miracle man

the only active pickups i actually know of are emgs and seymour duncan live wires (mustaine set and non mustaine set)

and the miracle man slays them both (i have used both in the past)

If i remember rightly a magazine that i read which turned me to bare knuckles dubbed the miracle man as "THE EMG KILLER"

oh yeah i best add. I use a miracle man now.

It has super tight bass response is really clear across the full range and gets awesome pinch harmonics.

So i believe it would be the perfect choice for you.

In future Roobubba you should go on down to the Oxford Guitar Gallery - They're very friendly and helpful there; they'll discuss your options with you one-to-one when it comes to Bare Knuckles, and in my experience they are always happy to let you have a play if they have a guitar with that particular model of pickup in a guitar.
