nice!

I just heard on HC that the single pickup ones have a slightly better tone (due to not having to route out wood for the neck 'bucker?)?

that's kinda put me in a quandary... i want a neck pickup, but i also want the best tone!

That a really minimal point that i wouldnt worry about - if you want a neck pikcup then buy a guitar with a neck pickup, theres plenty out there that sound just fine!!

If you never use a neck pickup then a single pickup guitar may be for you but the main advantages is that you are not paying for something you wont use.

There is more variation between the tone of peices of wood that came from the same tree than a neck pikcup route would make on that guitar. . .   if it was an SG shape with the neck mostly free of the body and the neck tenon extending into the pickup route then it might make mroe difference- but still not enough to worry about!

I'd expect the tone difference to come more from the fact that less pickups means less string pull - therefore having only one pickup means a bit more sustain, and a slightly stronger more present tone perhaps.

+1 on the reduced string pull (as Bainzy said) - there is something special about single pickup guitars, they're just loud and raw.  my old SG jr was just a monster of a guitar - makes you really work the volume and tone pots to get different tones.

yes - possibly slightly better sustain but better tone is harder to judge and personally i have never played many modern guitars that lacked sustain anyway (apart from ones that lacked sustain because something wasnt working correctly), i have played plenty with bad tonal qualities

Lets not forget that sutain and tone (whilst obviously connected) are seperate issues!!

I do like single pickup guitars a lot but i also like the sound of a neck pickup and find most players do not want to loose that.
