I just heard on HC that the single pickup ones have a slightly better tone (due to not having to route out wood for the neck 'bucker?)?
that's kinda put me in a quandary... i want a neck pickup, but i also want the best tone!

That a really minimal point that i wouldnt worry about - if you want a neck pikcup then buy a guitar with a neck pickup, theres plenty out there that sound just fine!!
If you never use a neck pickup then a single pickup guitar may be for you but the main advantages is that you are not paying for something you wont use.
There is more variation between the tone of peices of wood that came from the same tree than a neck pikcup route would make on that guitar. . . if it was an SG shape with the neck mostly free of the body and the neck tenon extending into the pickup route then it might make mroe difference- but still not enough to worry about!
