I'm having a really hard time making up my mind about the CS.
On the one hand I really really love the rich and saturated sound.
On the other hand the CS bridge sounds a bit tame in the mids to me. Eventhough I know that the CS is not mid scooped, most clips seem to lack a bit of the mid bite I expected.
Its hard to describe. The mids are definitely there but the sound very "round".
Does anyone know what I'm talking about?
I know what you're talking about and this mainly depends on the amp and guitar.
To me it would make sense if we could hear a decent CS clip recorded with a real Gibson LPC/S. Wood does make a lot, lot of difference and Les Pauls are known for having tons of mids already, so that's why the CS sounds perfect in a Les Paul, very well balanced (which makes a lot of sense).
In the clip it sounds like some parts of the guitar are made from
maple and not from of mahogany, but I'm not sure (I'd like to know more of this). Maple definately gives the guitar a brighter attack with more 'snap', which I can definately hear in this clip. A mahogany neck on a full-bodied (mahogany body/maple cap) LP, gives thicker mids from itself. The neck is one of the most important things.
However, in this clip you can notice that the pickups are open-poled (not closed nickle/chrome), which also plays a part in the more 'edgy' tone here.
You can still definately hear it's the CS (which I like), especially in the part where more gain comes into play (which is the CS at its best). It's not a clean alnico V tone monster (use other pickups for that stuff), but it does sound great clean as well.
These pickups sound different in different guitars, but always with that BKP character.
