Why doesn't anyone have Emeralds?!
« on: June 28, 2007, 06:12:58 PM »
I was looking at possible options for my Les Paul that is on it's way if i don't like the stock pickups.
I love the tone on Emerald by Thin Lizzy and Sgmypods new clips have amazing tone!
Though i think i've only seen him and 1 other person who i can't remember their name with them.
So what is wrong with the Emeralds?!

Bit too high output and compressed for my taste.  I've played sgmypod's Bluesbird and it does sound great.  Just not my cup of tea if I'm chosing the pickups.

I like a more open, cleaner, airier tone - hence the unpotted Mules in my LP Standard and unpotted P-90s waiting to go into my LP Junior Lite.

i'm sure philking will answer in more detail, and i seem to remember it was the first bkp he brought.

but, anyway: when i tried his i thought it was a very fun pickup. definately vintage hot, but totally balanced and versatile. its very well designed imho.

on the other hand, its been said 1000x you cant go wrong with mules in a les paul whatever style of music you play.

Haha yeah the Mule is always a tempting option, i'm trying to find a good straight out rock pickup, the easiest solution to the problem is me liking the stock pickups  i hope i do.

I always thought the Rebel Yell would be a bit too hot for rock riffing (though i don't have one so i don't really know), i want something along the lines of Priestess/Guns n Roses/Towers of London etc.

Well I have the Emeralds, at the moment they're waiting for a Gibson SG guitar which is where they were installed in the beginning replacing the SD 59s and a JB. The sound We were after was Thin Lizzys , even though they played mostly Les Pauls. It turnout to be a tone 10 out of 10 people loved. I changed them for the Warpigs, which eventually lead to lots of complaints. I couldn't be happier with the way they sound. They do what the SD59s and JB cannot......clean, clear, well defined mids that are not overwhelming. Excellent for hard rock.

I have emeralds!

I prefer them to my rebell yells, although I think they are in a much better guitar.

You have a few les paul pickups there, mules, emeralds, rebel yells. Which is you're favorite and what is best for some rock riffing?

I' m predominantly a riff based guitarist; and pretty shite at knowing exactly what I want;

However the one guitar I keep picking up over and over is the one with the VH2's in it.

I guess it depends what style of riffing exactly I quite like a thundering e-string to pedal tone off of.

I'd prob go with the VH2's or the Rebel Yells.

I've got my yells in a really shitety Epiphone - so I dont think I'm getting the best out of them.

(the vh2s are way sweeter though IMO!)

To be honest you cant go wrong with either (or any!)

The emeralds def have more punch but for me the VH2's have a more complex  tone.

The Emerald was based on the hotter overwound bridge pickups that were fitted in Les paul Customs in the early 1970s - designed to have a bit more punch.

Robbo was using a LP Custom whilst in Thin Lizzy so was probably a good benchmark of this pickups tone and sound.

But The Emerald along with the Riff Raff does seem a bit under discussed on this forum at times.
