I have to disagree with everyone here - I like it! It's nice to see Gibson doing some new guitars which aren't just regular models with weird finishes or novelty hardware (SG GT anyone?). And you can still get the 2-pickup version, so it's not as if they're forcing anyone to buy this one.
I suspect the middle pickup gets in the way a bit, but that would be equally true of old 3-pickup Les Paul and SG Customs.
whatever happened to simplicity in design?
It
is simple, isn't it? 3 pickups, volume, tone and a selector switch. No more complex than a Strat. A 5-way blade switch might have been better, but I don't think it would fit in the shalllow V body - and I'm sure the rotary works well enough.
And the switching arrangement makes a hell of a lot more sense than the extremely limited options on the aforementioned 3-pickup Customs.
I have never been able to get past the headstock.... I even owned a V for a while and I still hated it.
What's wrong with the headstock? It complements the body shape perfectly. Fair enough if you just don't like Vs, but I think it's a classic design. It would look wrong with any other headstock shape.
