A few Holy Diver myths laid to rest... (EDIT: take 2 on pg2)

Sorry for the lame pun in the title :)  Just threw this clip together for those who mistakenly believe that:
a) Holy Diver can't do METAL
b) Holy Diver doesn't work in Les Pauls
(Actually, I threw it together while trying to figure out how to use my new recorder, but that's a story for another thread ;))

FWIW I've changed almost my entire recording setup (as well as my amp!) since I last recorded anything, so still getting used to the new gear.

Probably one of the most significant changes was getting "proper" studio headphones (Beyer DT100).  I was using some Panasonic HiFi headphones before which colour the sound, adding a lot of bass, so what I used to heard wasn't a million miles away from what HiFi speakers were doing to the sound on playback.  With the DT100s it didn't sound that bassy when I recorded - in fact I was hitting the strings as hard as I could because I thought it needed more "oomph" :lol:

Oh well, you get the idea - Holy Divers can go m***********g heavy :twisted:

PS: For those who didn't get the title, this clip is loosely derived from a Rob Halford song called "Laid to Rest" on the first Fight CD...

Agreed.  It certainly has the chug and drive required, just maybe a little too much bass.

Try re-recording and turning the bass down, that may be all you need.

I'd like to hear them with more mids dialled in, way too scooped for my tastes.  Plenty of chunk in the low end though.

I think if he lowered the bass a bit that would improve the mids more than you think too, but yeah the mids could definitely come up.

That's really good, quite moody.

It reminds me of the soundtrack of Vidocq (might not ring a bell as it is a French movie, not sure it has been subtitled or dubbed) But basically the music was helping creating the thick and  heavy ambiance of the backstreet basement of 18th century Paris. It was working really well as the movie is a sci-fi / crime story of 3 century ago.

For further reference think of a band like Apocalyptica (the one that used to do Metallica covers with cellos and other distorted classical instruments.

It's bassy, but if you used a multi band compressor to control the bass end it'd be fine, if you have one. Anyhow, it's good playing and tone regardless, and you can see that they have quite some power to them.
