I'm finding the tone I get from my Marshall DSL100 too harsh, spikey and fizzy. So Im looking at selling it and buying a new amp with a more focused, smoother tone. Would a Laney gh50l fit my needs or would just changing the speakers solve my problem? At the moment I have a marshall 1960 cab with 4 g12t75's.
I play mainly classic rock like AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Pearl Jam, Black Sabbath, early ozzy etc... and my main guitar is a gibson sg with nailbomb.

You should look into getting a Splawn if you want classic Marshall tone but without the tizziness.

I'd say the speakers are your main issue here. Get some Celestion G12Hs which will really fatten up the tone compared to the G12-Ts.

+1 for definite having just done it with my JCM800 (see sound files on g12 thread for comparison).

so true, when I had my DSL with a cr@ppy standard Marshall cab (75's) it sounded shite, like playing through a carrier bag full of smashed crabs... but through my ENGL cab with V30's and V60's it sounded amazing, crunchy, bassy and full of character

Marshall for me, I do like Laney's but I'm always gonna be in the old Marshall corner. I love my 900.

Lol that is such a perfect way of describing how it sounds.

I think I'll change the speakers then, probably to g12h's. Does it matter that they are only 30 watts as apposed to the 75W speakers in there at the moment or is that not a problem?

4x30w speakers will make 120w which should handle the 100w amp. I use a 60w rated cab (2xG12H) with my 50w Laney and theres no problems even when cranking. G12Hs really are great - I tried out a JCM900 through a stock marshall cab and it sounded absolutely shite - really thin and buzzy. Put it through my G12H cab and it was awesome, I think I actually preferred it to my Laney, and that was only the dual reverb 900 which is meant to be the worst of the lot.

thanks for that, I can't wait to get the speakers changed now. The tone I'm gettin from my cab is really starting to irritate me.
Which g12h speakers would be the best, the heritage ones or 70th aniversary ones?

Two of each might be nice, in an X-pattern.

The Heritages are lower resonance, giving a slightly smoother and darker tone. The Anniversarys are a little brighter.

There's a HUGE price difference though.

If you want a higher powered Celestion that loves gain and sounds molasses-thick get some Classic Lead 80s. They have such a gorgeous low end chunk on 'em and will fatten up any amp.

If you have a 4x12, try a pair of Classic Lead 80s and a pair of G12H-30s - I promise you will not be dissapointed.

I have a DSL50, and its $%&#ing amazing. Keep the Deep switch on, get an MXR Distortion+ and the tone is great :D

My 900DR head, on 50W mode, through a pair of Vintage 30's is paradise. :)

What is the benefit of mixing two types of speakers, would getting a pair of classic lead 80's and a pair of G12H's provide a better classic rock tone than just 4 G12H's?

I have classic lead 80's in a VC50 (Laney 2x12 combo amp) and it slays!! Though i still want to try out a JCM 800 and 900 Slx :D
