Any Washburn experts out there?
« on: October 10, 2007, 05:38:44 PM »
Just nipped along to my local music shop this afternoon and was pleasantly surprise to see they had a Washburn N4 in stock. This was potentially dangerous as I have a couple of grand in my account to pay off some credit cards with - I nearly parted with £950 of it today.

However - I've seen some custom versions of the N4 in black, white and even snakeskin - but this was a sort of tobacco sunburst version. Presumably an early version of the guitar - but I've not been able to find any information about this model on the Internet.

Are there any Washburn gurus out there who know anything about this particular version?

Incidentally, the Stephen's extended cutaway is one of the best features I've seen on a guitar - the upper fret access is amazing.

You'd better ask/search on the washburn forum, there have been so many Nuno's.....

I'm fairly sure the early models were mostly natural with a few black ones and later the padauk. I don't know a tobacco sunburst but I have seen a nice cherry sunburst model which has a mahogany body with a maple top rather than the usual alder http://www.shimokura-guitar.com/outlet/item_view.php?&order=1&category=1&brand=146&shop=8.
There are lots of limited versions of the Nuno model using different woods, finishes, inlays etc, many of them designed for the Japanese market (some actually made in Japan too so check if it says made in USA or not) as he is really popular here even for his post Extreme bands. Either ways it's bound to be a good guitar and probably worth the dosh if it feels right and plays  well.

right! basically I am a official nuno freak and i think i maybe able to answer your question. washburn did produce N4s with fancy finishes during mid 90's and the tobacco sunburst model was one of poplular version of em all (apart from natural finished ones of course).

I would classify N4s in 3 differnt groups.

1. original Davies model
these were produces during 91-92 by stephen davies himself along with 10 of skilled crews, and these n4s are regarded as the best n4s. these are what nuno himself has been using from 91 (well his one is the first one ever made and only N4 exists)

2. Washburn Factory Model
93-presence models. washburn factory made. Slightly different profiled body and neck and these includes paduck, various different finished ones, 10 year anniversary korina, snake skin etc etc. original black finished model were produced during 1993 and paduck model was also introduced in 93,

3. custom model
Well.. these n4s are ordered by washburn dealers like boogiestreet in usa, and they had various different finishes. all white, black, paduck etc. They seems to be the same models as factory ones but with different finishes.

950GBP seems a bit expensive if it is a second hand guitar. Do check their condition before you purchase it, ie.Fret Wear, surface condition, neck condition, serial number etc etc. If it is brand new sunburst model, think it is a quite reasonable price but not cheap! Remind you... you can order a brand new N4 from usa with pre-duty tax paid and free shipping to the u.k less than 1800dollars.

On final note, Apart from Davies model, it doesn;t matter what model you get, they are all same in my opinion

Always loved the N4, beautiful guitar to play, & because of the smallness of the body perfect for me...just could never afford one. If it's new it sounds like a bit of a deal...get it!

I am going to pour a bit of cold water on this-use the money for what it was intended. Sorry to say it but I have a son that got into trouble with credit cards and I could have bought at least 3 custom Felines with what I have had to spend to bail him out.

Thanks for the info guys.
Some chap on the Washburn forum has a tobacco burst on Mahogany, which is unusual. Perhaps it's one of those......

Anyway, the N4 will have to wait for the time being. At the moment, my GAS is pointing me in the slightly more affordable direction of one of these:

wow, hitmen are a lot more expensive than they used to be...  :o

seriously, though +1. if you have money for paying off credit cards, use it to pay credit cards. I'm all for increasing GAS, but only when you aren't borrowing it at extortionate rates of interest. Think how many fewer guitars you'll be able to buy when that interest starts compounding.
