That isn't guitar related, as that is fairly obvious.
Is it a place, someone, a piece of history?

successfully restringing...
-
Listening to a song that and picking out one moment that makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Usually a mixture of great phrasing and note choice.
I.E., the whammy dive at the end of the first fast run in Crushing Day (Satch) or the first bend in the solo to Pull Me Under (Dream Theater).
-
Spending time with my mates, drinking may or may not be involved :P
Good films.
Playing guitar obviously, especially when I manage to come up with a good riff :)
And as sad/geeky as it sounds 3D graphics/modelling. The satisfaction at the end is worth all the headaches you have whilst doing it.

Other than the lady; cigars, whisky, horrifically abrassive music and Steve Earle.

wow, same here (though it spoils it if you listen to the cool bit too many times in a row  )
i was serious about the restringing, too.

^I know.
The Sweet Child O' Mine solo has lost all its impact on me D:

I enjoy doing it as well, headaches or not.
You sort of develop these interests studying GCSE graphics under without a doubt the coolest DT teacher ever. Haven't even had to do any coursework yet :D

Oh, to add to the previous. Learning.
Something that didn;t realy settle with me till I was out of my teens and would have been nice to have really clicked with earlier. Simply KNOWING stuff is awesome. Learning things is great. Sadly I'm still debt ridden from my previous degree, but I completely intend to go back to uni before I'm thirty. I don't even know what I intend to do. I just want to know more stuff.
-
A good night's sleep. Quality films too. A snapped G string ;)
More to add later
-
Being told i'm doing well, getting praise of any kind really, it's good.
-
lady; cigars, whisky.
yep, those plus a decent pint and the look on peoples faces when they pick up a new guitar
-
Happy? God, I'll have to think about that...
-
lady; cigars, whisky.

I had a smashing Cohiba Esplendidos earlier. It's getting a bit late for rich cigars so I might have me a wee H. Uppman for my Friday night bedtime cigar. Grand.
-
tbh cigars have gone down on my list, as much as i enjoy them i have been cutting right back on the smoking. Fags are pretty much gone now apart from the odd one every few weeks... cigars are gone apart from when i have a particularly nice whiskey to drink with them and an indoor situation where somebody doesnt mind me smoking a cigar - both seem to be lacking at the moment
now its all about getting the most enjoyment from the ones i will allow myself
-
I stopped smoking about a year ago. Though admittedly, because I generally smoke Churchill and Corona sized, large gauge cigars, I probably still smoke an equivelant of a two/three packs of fags a week, but that's only a couple cigars on a friday and saturday, though more if I'm out at any special event or weddings and whatnot.
Aside from anything else, it's too bloody expensive! I've a full humidor just now, so fingers crossed I've got a good six months in it!
It is a little upsetting sometimes when I think, you know, I've spent £500 on cigars and whisky in the last few months, think of all the NOISE MACHINES I could have bought
-
...being able to go see live music every now and then...reading Hemingway....or Philosophy in general....an occasional toke when the missus is away....ME TIME..I would do anything to have a week to myself.....and BEER...and WINE....
I always go back to when I was a teenager as well-getting the new "Guitar for the Practicing Musician" magazine, full of tabs, and rushing home to fire up my little amp-that was special!!!!
...did I mention beer..??
-
If both things I love most appear on the same scene :O)
-
Happy? yeah I remember that. Actually I am just kidding.Waking up everyday and being healthy is pretty damn good-everything else is a bonus.

My cats.
And playing loud, live music in front of an appreciative crowd !! (can't believe no-one else has mentioned this yet !!!)
-
Some good beers, being in York with my best mates, perhaps a cigar every now and again. Having a really good session playing guitar (when i'm playing well, and the rig sounds better than it did the day before). Being behind the mixing desk in a good recording session is nice too, when the musicians know what they're doing! :) And also building guitars... i think i get more pleasure from building them, than actually playing these days; theres something about taking some timber and crafting a musical instrument from it, that gives such a sense of accomplishment.
Seeing other people being happy!

I second that. Playing live is all that keeps me sane.
Love cats too, but don't have one anymore. Just go and fuss other peoples now...... 8)

Not watching 24 hour news channels, too much doom and gloom! Or reading the papers, whats the point! Read a good book instead.
Jamming, when its really cooking, you know when you have an esp thing going, thats good!
My ipod and all the music I love that it can serve up when I'm working.
Good pubs with really good company.
I used to smoke roll ups, up until a year a go but I don't miss it one bit. I sometimes get that nicotine need but just ignore it now as its not that strong. So won't go near a cigar or any kind of smoke at all. I can see why some of you like cigars though as they're really good some of them and I did like them. I did like a joint sometimes but gave that up two years ago as it just screws your head up. After reading some websites on smoking....I'll leave it there on smoking I think.
Beer of all kinds! I love the stuff, I'll try anything. If I'm in the pub for a long time then tend to go with something ordinary. If in doubt drink Guinness.
Wine is nice, not when I'm out though, just indoors.
Whiskey is just the best drink ever. After trying a quite a few over the years, I tend to buy the Islay single malts. Can't stop getting Ardbeg at the moment! :D
A good curry sometimes but prefer Italian food more these days.

How gorgeous !
Actually , my own priorities have been echoed by Ratrod, 38thbeatle, Hamfist ( partially ) Twinfan and NFE.
Waking up ( relatively ) healthy
My beloved cats
Spending time with people I love
Learning new stuff ( especially stuff connected to the guitar and growing musically ).
The only variant from Hamfist is 'Playing mellow stuff quietly ' .
and of course - that drug of all drugs
STARBUCKS COFFEE ... 8)

S'all about Starbucks caramel hot chocolate.
-
S'all about Starbucks caramel hot chocolate.
For me it's about a large straight 'n' strong filter coffee with enough milk to stop it eroding the lining of the cup . I even keep a bag in my icebox for a fresh home brew in the morning. A close friend even bought me the 'authentic' cup for Christmas - so it looks like my cover is blown.
( I do 'detox' on Darjeeling tea for the rest of the day though ).
-
Oh nice, two things that need sorting about Starbucks is the fancy size names and the painfully overpriced food.
My mate steals a mug from their every time he goes, his reasoning behind his actions is that "They're fascists."
-
If I have to get coffee out, it has to be Cafe Nero - don't like starbuck's coffee, seems a bit wimpy to me
For us it's Lavazza (bog standard, silver/red wrapping, not the black one) brewed up in the stove-top espresso machine at home (we even take it on holiday ).
Not sure what makes me happy. Nearly anything can nowadays, even the cr@p stuff once I've beaten it... it's probably the presence/company/thought of my wife that makes the difference :D
-
I'll drink any coffee, I usually just have nescafe gold blend
-

Kenco Rappor beats nescafe gold hands down.
However Nescafe do have that realy nice one in the black jar
-
Starbucks is weird, you can't walk in and ask for a hot chocolate. It has to be in their own Starbar-stewardised language. Or so it seems in the places I've been into.
-
brewed up in the stove-top espresso machine at home
I have one of these, it's my post-dinner best friend.
-
i occasionaly get in the mood where itake coffee too seriously, i have a small and large stove top espresso jug and a turkish coffee pan that get used most. Generally the illy espresso is good and easily available, good prices on that in cosco.
in my old job i used to brew a full jug of fresh whittards coffee to take to work every day, now i am usually stuck with instant and tend to have percol instant espresso for the little cup or Douwe Egberts pure indulgence when its a longer drink. occasionally i get myself some raw beans to roast them myself - can be hit and miss though since i dont have a proper roaster
anyway, happy things!
1. Its snowing... ok its only very slightly but its definately snowing
2. We just booked our honeymoon cottage, having a bigger holiday the year after but the week after the wedding will be spent here
http://www.hideaways.co.uk/holiday-cottage/the-old-chapel-H227
also been to see a couple of village halls today for the reception.
-
That's a pretty groovy looking place to stay :D
Have you agreed on the band for the reception yet?
-
thats one of the next things on the list, i wanted to sort out the venue first... we think we have decided on food, its probably going to be a jacket potato van :) a normal basic buffet will cost about £10 a head.... or we can have jacket spuds for £3 a head. considering one of my friends had fish and chips and had to pay £16 a head i am very happy with a spud!!
-
Scoring a goal, preferably a volley from 30 yards (Although very unlikely)
Coming down a big hill on my mountain bike, not knowing what's round the corner and going fast
Seeing my new baby boy smile for the first time or watching my 21 month old daughter play and smile
Keeping my job
Avoiding Starbucks
Winning stuff (although very unlikely)
Making Stuff
Learning Stuff
Drinking, then stopping drinking and running my ass off for a month then back to drinking
Sitting at home, having a joint and writing 10 songs in a day (although now very unlikely)
Watching Man U win the League again
Watching Rafa lose the plot
Wanching Man City, the ritchest club in the world lose to Stoke city and not win away for 5 months :D
Playing new instruments, Banjo's Mandolins etc
etc etc etc

I will have to try the Cafe Nero stuff then Andy : - but as an old romantic, I mainly signed in to say how nice it was to read you giving tribute / credit to your wife / partner ; as did NFE and Hunter in earlier pictoral tributes . Now that sort of stuff makes me happy ... :)

yeah, it's true. i was in one in vienna a couple of years ago, and they told me i was pronouncing something like "cookie" (can't remember exactly, but it was certainly an english/american english word) incorrectly.

yeah, i'm not fussed on starbucks coffee, it's just not that nice. i prefer costa... though costa doesn't have as nice a selection of food as starbucks... (even if starbucks food can taste a bit synthetic, at least they have stuff i actually like) :( cafe nero's nice too, never been to it much though as until recently there weren't any in northern ireland (i think one opened recently in belfast, but i haven't been to it yet).
-
We have Costa at work so I have to buy different when I'm out and about!
Nero is good, but their cash only policy can be a pain if I've forgotten to go the bank.
As a slight aside, I could easily live without alcohol but I'd be absolutely mortified if I couldn't have nice coffee :(
-

Ditto, but I could make do with bad coffee - or even tea. It's the caffeine I need.

[dumb off-topic ON]
I'm sorry for the dumbness, but what's the difference betwen Whisky and Whiskey?
[dumb off-topic OFF]
-
Whisky is Scottish, Whiskey is Irish or American as far as I know.
-
Thanks :D
-
I love tea! I have a huge mug just over a pint which needs 3 tea bags of Assam.
I take coffee to work with me in a stainless steel flask which I make in a cafetiere. I use Percol Americana, Sainsburys Java and sometimes Lavazza as its good value. I have to drink it all by early afternoon or it tastes like cr@p. The Java one is so strong, but i'm up at 5:00am and one or two of those around 8:00 really gives you a boost.
I've tried a few different coffee shops. I'm not that struck on Starbucks, mainly cos I prefer the old cafes London had before this globalisation of our high streets, city and town centres.
-
I could easily go without coffee, but life without tea would be horrible :( I dont get a boost out of coffee/caffeine for some reason, only drink it for the flavour really.
-
The main thing I can think of is spending time with my girlfriend - we were inseparable for 2.5 years (i.e. together every day, for the majority of the day), but since she's gone to Uni I just haven't seen so much of her. She's a very busy lady it seems.
The Discovery Channel - every time I spend an hour in front of it I feel like I've learned something and/or I've been on holiday to somewhere exotic.
Old-Skool DOS games. Commander Keen. Jazz Jackrabbit. Duke Nukem. Jetpack. 'Nuff said.
Steak. Rare. With Caesar Salad
Discovering GREAT music, that for some reason nobody seems to have heard of?
Audio gear in general. Just playing with it; anything that creates or processes sound is FANTASTIC to me. There's nothing more fun.
Sun.
-
playing tennis - yes, unusual for a guitarist, but I used to be very good back in the day and still enjoy playing a couple of times a week and for my uni team...
-

We very nearly had a hog roast at ours.
Have a look at Cape Verde for the big holiday, it's where we went for our honeymoon (after a week in Sufolk) and because they were just opening up direct flights there, it was still quite cheap...... and bloody hot...... and there were help yourself beer taps dotted all around our hotel
-
I dont get a boost out of coffee/caffeine for some reason, only drink it for the flavour really.
Same here - at uni years ago I used to take strong black coffee (Original Nescafe, two heaped teaspoons!) as a bed-time drink!
Steak. Rare. With Caesar Salad
Oh YEAH!! One of our favourite meals :D

Yeah, I drink coffee just before bed too. I don't get a caffeine boost, what I do get is a blinding headache if I go for more than about 12 hours without caffeine. :(
(But rare steak.... ugh! :x )
-
steak has to be rare philly!!!
cooking a steak is another thing i take far too seriously
-
steak has to be rare philly!!!
On that we shall have to disagree! I went through a phase of "trying" rare/medium steak because that's how you're "supposed" to have it, but I just don't like it.
Now on the rare (see what I did there) occasions that I have steak, it's back to Nuked and never mind what the snotty waiters think!
-
rare steak gives me the shitees  I have to have it medium at least. Steak with salad though? Thats just wrong. You need potatoes with it!
-
I always ask for my steak to be cremated, if I wanted it to bleed while I eat it I'd eat it live.
-
heathens ;)
-

Love steak :D (put the Ian Siegal's Meat and Potato playing here)
-

Barbarian.
-
Cut off the horns, wipe it's arse and it's ready for the plate
Actually I prefer mine around the medium mark, just cooked enough for the sugars to crystalise. Off for a walk up the shop for tonights dinner. Might get a steak (or go through the fields and steal a cow)
-
oh, i get a nice colour on the outside, you have to have the caramelisation.. cooking it black and blue is best if the steak is good enough.
If i am doing something like rump it gets a little longer, rib eye would get a bit longer again as its fatty enough not to dry out and the fat isnt as pleasant nearly raw
-

Did you see the Heston Blumenthal programme where he did the "perfect" steak?
He cooked it for about 300 years at 50 degrees C or something - at which point it still looked completely raw - then blowtorched the outside. It looked absolutely horrible. :(

No, nuked is the same as cremated.
I guess naked would be the bleeding one. Sort of.

I saw him deep fry a whole chicken once...
-
Did you see him do the Little Chef thing? That chief exec was one of the biggest knob-heads I've seen (and that is against some very stiff competition). I've been intending on going to the Fat Duck for a long time now.
Nice food - that makes me happy. Off to Jamie Olivers (Fifteen Cornwall) in March. Been there before and it was lovely. Dead simple food, but really top notch ingredients and really nice.
-
I only eat it bleeding if my dad makes it, cause he's a chef so of course it's safe.. right? .. RIGHT!?!?!?
But when I cook it I like it to be not bleeding all over me.
-
its safe anyway, beef can be eaten quite raw if the inclination takes you but i wouldnt recommend it unless you have a good cut. i always eat steak on the day i buy it to be sure
Pork's safe to eat a little rare now as well, at least british pork is.. its nice not having to overcook a chop
-
One more "napalm-burnt" steak lover here :D
-
I like them with a pink middle. The best one I ever had was in a place called Port Cambell on the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, Australia. It was about an inch and a half thick and cheap as they're the norm around there. :)

ah, yeah, that makes sense. having stuff at work kinda spoils it for the rest of the time.
never really noticed the cash only policy, but then i don't use cards really.
don't like rare steak either, i prefer it to be cooked.

I fry mine. Score it first and rub some salt, chillis and garlic into it then fry it.
Bloomin' lovely.
-
does anyone here not understand what's so good about steak or is it just me?
-
i rub it with a bit of pepper and olive oil, fry it in the griddle pan on a very high heat for a minute or two each side to get the colour. then transfer it to the oven covered in tin foil for a few minutes. then take it out and rest if for a few minutes (the most important step).
exact times will depend on your oven
-
does anyone here not understand what's so good about steak or is it just me?
No I am with you there. I cannot understand the attraction of steak, raw or cooked or whatever-I prefer to see it in it's natural state, i.e. still a living part of an animal grazing contentedly in a field but then each to his own.
I like food ( I eat nothing else) but it is one of the many things I enjoy in life, along with a nice cup of tea, glass of beer, glass of whisky, decent book, great music, beautiful view, family, friends, my cats, traveling, staying at home (and I'd better mention Mrs 38th here in addition to family just in case she reads it) etc etc... not necessarily in that order.
-
You can wake me up in the middle of the night for a good steak.

cows are also a bigger threat to global warming than cars, so my lack of eating steak decreases demand and so there are less cows in the world and my methane footprint is less

Er.. er... but if you're not eating steaks (and therefore not helping to rid the world of this methane generating, pestilential, menace...) it seems a rather specious argument to suggest that your methane footprint is less because there are in fact less cows as a direct result of your inaction!!
I think all we cow-guzzling types (whether we partake raw or otherwise) are owed a huge debt of gratitude for our sterling efforts to protect the rest of you from the plague of ruminants with which our ancestors have seen fit to inflict us with :D

Will, I would LOVE to +1 your statement, but I'm begining to suspect there might actually be something in this global warming malarky... (unless of course, you are saying "we're all doomed just by our very existence, get over it already..." then I wholeheartedly agree with you!!)
-
Do the greenies also only eat rare steak, as to decrease the amount of energy wasted on sufficiently cooking food :P
AndyR: I'm all for carbon neutrality, as the family owns a lot of land + trees, I have to work especially hard to produce enough Carbon Dioxide by keeping the wood and coal fire going 24/7
And finally... these debates make me happy too ;) in good humour ofcourse
-

It's just you.
This thread is making me really want a steak, may have to go and buy one to try and cook tomorrow  Whats the best way to do it?
First things first, buy fillet steak, not of the other nonsense. At a push, rib-eye, but really fillet all the way. So I'm assuming you have fillet cause best cooking approaches vary from cut to cut.
Bit salt and pepper on it, a decent steak should need owt else.
Griddle pan, wiped with just enough oil to make it shine. Get it searing hot, drop your steak in for litterally two or three seconds then turn it over so it's sealed. Then it depends on how rare or well done you like it. I'll rarely leave it in there for more than two minutes a side and that's if it's awfully thick thick. But I do look it to be in a state where a decent vet could revive it.
I generally make sauces too, but a decent cooked steak and some dirty great big thick chips is fine and dandy!
-

Quite a bit of its in here already!
Blue steak (rare?!?! Wusses)
Strong coffee
Beer
Nice sound systems
The company of a handfull of good friends
The fairer sex (most of the time  on ballace, they go in the happy list )
Weed
Pistachio nuts. They're like crack to me.
Learning
Having problems to figure out (of a technical or logical nature)
And the musical list
Crushing, heavy, tight, scalpel precise guitar tone
Big, sharp gun-shot snares
Tight, bright kicks
Coming up with new riffs
Recording, especially for other people - their different tastes and wants set you challenges you wouldnt have demanded of yourself
Oh, and sleep. I $%ing love sleeping. I hate having to wake up before I'm god damn good and ready!

i disagree about the fillet being the best choice if we were talking about a 'proper' steak and chips kind of meal - its far too lean and refined for that. Fillet would be the cut i was having with some fresh steamed veg or briefly cooked in red wine with mash.
a good rump steak can be perfect, but it needs to be nicely marbled with a little fat, and be of good quality - most supermarket stuff is far too fresh and lean but i got a great one from waitrose the other day. as soon as i opened the pack i could tell how much better it was going to taste than the usual supermarket cuts, it looked, felt and smelt infinately better... but really you should go to your butchers!!
also i always oil the meat rather than the pan, seems to work better when working with a griddle pan (which i probably wouldnt do for a piece of fillet). my pre cooking procedure is remove from packing and pat dry with kitchen roll, give it some pepper and leave it. Oil it (fairly decent olive oil would be my choice) just before putting it in the pan then salt it in the pan... i might pepper it up a while before cooking but adding salt too early can make it a little tougher
i make a mean blue cheese sauce as well

I prefer salmon over steak. Just had some.

This thread is making me really want a steak, may have to go and buy one to try and cook tomorrow  Whats the best way to do it?
As others have said, depends on the cut. I also disagree that fillet is the only cut worth having. I'm a porterhouse fellow myself - it has a richer beefy rather than steaky flavour if that makes any sense? I do agree with all the searing hot pan, seal, cook as long as you feel necessary advice but I would add it really helps to let the meat rest for five to ten minutes before serving. This will help it relax and become more tender. To do this, when it's finished cooking put the steak on a warm plate and cover it, then put it in a warm oven - as you might if you were keeping plates warm. Leave for up to ten minutes and then serve.
If you want a quick sauce to go with it this is one I quite often do:
Deglaze the steak pan with a good slug of red wine (this leaves you most of a bottle to drink - a good thing).
Reduce the wine down by at least half.
Add a dash of mushroom ketchup and a couple of table spoons of creme fraiche.
Grind in a little black pepper and serve.
Don't forget to drink the rest of the wine. This is very important.

ARGHHHH I'm having Steak Eating Syndrome
-
i did mention letting it rest.
then take it out and rest if for a few minutes (the most important step).
this goes for any meat as cooking forces juices out and tightens any muscle tissue, the resting time lets the muscle relax again and it will soak up some of its juices to keep it moist and succulent

A 2” thick Porterhouse cooked Black & Blue (charred on the outside red in the center). Add to that some steamed asparagus, a couple of tablespoons of sautéed onions with mushrooms, and a small helping of rice pilaf. Served with a nicely chilled Sam Smiths Nut Brown Ale.

Apologies, must read more carefully.

I go for the Hugh Fernly-shiteOnTheWall theroy, I now eat a lot less meat, but what I do eat is much better quality. Find yourself a good butcher, or even better get direct from the farm (there's numerous places round here, but I do live in the country so you city boys might have a bit of trouble). If it's packaged, then take it out, wipe it down and let it breath for bit (as soon as you get it). The loosely cover it until you need it.
The spermarket stuff is very rarely hung for long enough.

hmm, my steak meal does make me happy, and it's pretty simple. i am going to have to try some of the methods posted earlier though! i get a nice piece of fillet or sirloin from my butcher and just fry it on a hot pan with a little olive oil, usually about 3 minutes a side for fillet, 2 for the normally thinner sirloin. then while it rests i fry a few mushrooms, peppers and onions. if i'm having potato or chips those are already cooked, but in recent times i've gone more for salads or steamed vegetables.
i also like a nice tuna steak. it's not as tasty as the beef, but it makes a good alternative, and apparently it's good for you :)
of course, plugging my les paul via my treble booster into my little 15watt valve amp and wailing for a while also puts a bit of a smile on my face :)
