What are they?
-
Well u might not need complete songs but defo some riffs / lead parts.. ...smoke on the water, purple haze, Whole lotta love, anything by evh or any other legendary players ...anything from blues, jazz, rock and metal...matter of taste and what suits your style of playing
-
An impossible question to answer! Actually, almost impossible to have a sensible debate about!
-
Smelly Cat by Phoebe Buffay :P

-
Whatever they are, you can guarantee I don't know at least 16 of them.
And if you're talking complete songs, I'm totally $%ed.
Ergo, I am not a guitarist.
-
 @ PhillyQ
All I know is that I class myself as a guitarist and not a musician...

I think I'm going to class myself as an "artist"..... that should be non-specific enough. :|

I think of you as a guitar curator...
Not a collector, as you have the urge to collect but you hardly ever keep (or use)

Yeah, it's all about the "hunt" and the catch, then I lose interest.
I do keep quite a lot (although when I look back at some of my purchases, I'm amazed how quickly they came and went!)
But you're certainly right about me not using them. :|

Likewise. I consider myself an pedal builder, tinkerer and general noise maker ;)

This started off as a means for me to get inspiration to learn something new - and you all ruined it - f++k you guys, I'm going home
-
I guess you now got inspiration for some nasty punk songs. :)
-
OK, anyone got any proper answers?
Johnny B. Goode
Rumble
Peter Gunn
Satisfaction
My Generation
Smoke on the Water
Eruption
Hmmm....
I give up. :?

If you only know parts of songs Philly perhaps you could do a video like the '100 riffs' one. Just a suggestion.

I can think of 20 riffs but not 20 songs

Ain't talking bout love...
-
Sunshine of Your Love
Day Tripper
Enter Sandman
Roadhouse Blues
Li'l Devil
You Really Got Me
Cocaine
Caroline
Walk This Way
Black Dog
I'm thinking more of riffs aren't I ?
I dunno, at any one time the only songs I know are the ones in the current set list.

Slayer - Raining Blood

^ +1
quote of the month right here, lmao

There should be a mandatory requirement to know all the songs that you would be banned from playing in a guitar shop, throughout the decades.
You know the "no stairway" (denied!) scenario.
http://youtu.be/RD1KqbDdmuE (http://youtu.be/RD1KqbDdmuE)
What would make that list?
Apache?
Johnny be good
daytrippper
satisfaction
Jumping jack flash
Purple Haze
Smoke on the water
Burn
paranoid
Stairway
Whole lotta Love
Black dog
Rock and Roll
Every breath you take
sultans of swing
Money for nothing
Smells like teen spirit
Lithium
master of puppets
enter sandman
nothing else matters
-
What would make that list?
Sweet Child O' Mine!
-
Paranoid certainly
-
Back In Black should be on your list!
-
It pleases me that there's songs getting mentioned that I've never knowingly heard.

As should Plug In Baby and Hysteria by Muse
It pleases me that there's songs getting mentioned that I've never knowingly heard.
Really never heard these?
Cool - it's always fun to discover good stuff
It'll give you something fun to do over the weekend.....
the only one I haven't knowingly heard is Slayer's Raining blood
Roadhouse Blues I wish I hadn't heard
-

I kind of have heard the main riff played before - sounds kind of Priest/Maiden/Metallica like
Kind of reminds me of Seek And Destroy perhaps.....
Interesting song - main riff is wonderful, but I don't like the rest at all - all goes wrong once the singing starts for me.
Goes back to being catchy again and then goes all mental and noisy towards the end, which I don't really like.

Not many, but a few. Rumble, Peter Gunn, Li'l Devil and Burn don't ring any bells.

Surely not Peter Gunn

or Link Ray and the Ray Men's The Rumble?

I'd heard both of them, couldn't ever have told you who they were by or what they were called. I have to say that Rumble bores me to death.

The Cult one only seems a little familiar. The Deep Purple one I knew well, just didn't know its title.

most of my Slayer albums are vinyl too from back in the day - only the ones that came out after vinyl was tough to get are on CD in my collection.

Are we talking about audience perception here Andy ?
Tears In Heaven ? Puff the magic dragon ? Lady in Red ?

funny you should mention Puff the Magic Dragon... 8)

Heck yes ! There must be a flowchart somewhere, showing formative influences of middle aged guitarists in the U.K. :
Puff the magic dragon > Dad's record collection > Early Fleetwood Mac > 70s Metal > Blues / Soul > Extra Heavy Metal > Dad's record collection > Puff the Magic Dragon.
What is your connection to this song David , do you live with the Dragon ?
-
hmmm...well this should do for a gypsy jazz guitarist...
Minor swing
Dark eyes
Nuages
All of me
I'll see you in my dreams
Sweet georgia brown
Hungaria
Djangology
Minor blues
Django's castle
J'attendrai
Django's tiger
I got rhythm
When day is done

I was in a hurry when I posted, and I've been out all day...
I kind of meant "whatever song you first manage to get through and can play it again" - if you can play one song on a guitar, you're a guitarist.
But seeing as you ask, er, I dunno "House of the Rising Sun"?? That seemed to be the one everyone was starting with when I was starting. (I never bothered though, I thought it was a boring song.)
I did three in one half-term holiday when I started, the first one was "King of the Road". Then "Greystone Chapel". But what I really wanted to learn was "Words" by the Bee Gees - that had the least and easiest chords of the songs of theirs I wanted to sing - and I could just about get through it without too many pauses by the end. I was pretty good on King of the Road by then, thoguh, but my fingers hurt like hell!!
When you can perform a song (whether in front of people or not) you're a guitarist.
Now, whether anyone would pay you for being a guitarist at that stage... that's a whole different question!
-
Surely not Peter Gunn
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=296wS9ome4M
Haha, the only place I know that tune from is Spy Hunter in the arcades. ;)

er..
it's really a question of what the 20 guitar tunes are that you think display a level of infectiousness and involuntary toe tappingyness and/or saying to your self in hushed tones "f**king hell" to warrant them being awesome enough for you to think " I wish i sounded like that"
Hole in the sky (Sabbath)
sweet emotion (Areosmith)
See the signs (Cromags)
Jailbreak (ACDC)
Rosalie (Lizzy)
Dark night (The Blasters)
Mother (live version is epic) (Danzig)
anything by Floyd
Miserlou (Dick dale)
Roadhouse Blues (The Doors)
Get it on (Marc Bolan)
Little Wing (Hendrix)
Eastbound and down (go on, chicken pick that, dare you) (Jerry Reed)
Rubinas blue sky happiness (Satriani)
Don't Stop Believing (cheesy? yes, but the picked hook right after steve perrys intro is incredible guitarmanship)
Freebird (all of it, yes, including the solo)
Another Invented Disease (In fact anything off Generation terrorists) (Manics)
Play that funky music (Wild Cherry)
hundred mile high city (Ocean Colour Scene)
hanger 18 (Megadeth)
-
Get some classic old skool rock'n'roll under your belt and the world is your oyster.

"House of the Rising Sun" was one of the first things I ever learned, way back in about 1980/81. Never got past the intro though... and I haven't learned very much since. :|
OK, if there's one song I can't play, but feel I should be able to play, to call myself a guitarist:
"Mississippi Queen" by Mountain.
End of.
-
Yep, House of the Rising Sun for me also. Back in those days it was all done by book and ear - none of this youtube nonsense!

yeah, thems were the days...
You'd take yer ratty acoustic to school and trade licks with the other folks. "Hey! I can do this... (losers)", and "flip! is that all it is?".
And laughing at the punks who seemed to think you were a girly-wuss if you couldn't play a full barre chord (but who didn't seem to realise that there's something of difference between a major and a minor )
Sigh, happy memories... (wot's youtube, by the way?)

I had a cheapo Les Paul copy, never took it to school though!
A chap called Roger Hopkins once brought in his brand new Fender Strat - natural finish, big headstock, maple neck, black scratchplate - and matching Fender amp. It caused quite a stir. Another kid played "Alternative Ulster" on it. We were duly impressed. :D

I can honestly say that I wouldn't recognise any of those songs. Pretty sure I've never heard any of them. Hell, I've probably not even heard of half of those bands.
But then I'm not sure I give too much of a $% ;)

Have you been heard "Living in a Box" by Living in a Box? Or "Out of Touch" by Hall & Oates? :P

Under the bridge (RHCP)
We're not gonna take it (Twisted Sister)
Killing in the name of (RATM)
7 nation army (the White Stripes)
La Bamba (Ritchie Valens)

He got out the wrong side of the telecaster this morning

Yeah okay I think I know the tune that the words 'get it on' are sung to (literally only those words) from the telly probably, and I think I've probably heard hole in the sky when I saw Ozzy back in 1994, but I couldn't tell you what it sounds like. did machine head do a cover of it?
Play that funky music, if it's followed by the word(s) wideboy or white boy, then yep heard of that.
All the rest? Not a clue :)
-
Just my own personal 20 that make the hairs on the back of my neck standup when i hear em lol
If you decide to give any of them a listen, turn them up loud.. with something like Jailbreak, it's essential to hear that old marshall grunting..

There are several in that list that it's probably near impossible to have grown up in any populous part of the west and not heard a bunch of times. You'll likely just not know the titles. Especially Freebird and Don't Stop Believing.

Just checked out both freebird and don't stop believing on youtube. I've never heard either before, was utterly unimpressed with both and haven't missed out by not having heard them in the last 32 years.
Do I need to point out at this point that I've never been into popular culture?

Sorry, I'm in an uncharacteristically foul mood at the moment. Must have something to do with the shiteting mother in law visiting next week. Again. :/
re: Beatw@ts - a junior school friend of mine played some of their shite at a birthday party when we were something like 6 or 7. From the moment I heard them I realised they were skill-less overhyped bullshitee merchants who did not deserve one iota of respect. I have kept firm to my duty as a human being since.

After 6/7 years old people stop inviting the entire class to parties and tend to invite fun people they like... So I guess that explains alot.

Indeed, as it happens we stayed friends for several years afterwards and even went on a couple of holidays together.
Even if he did like the Beatw@ts.

Notice he hasn't denied owning Abba Gold and the Moonlighting box set!
Oh and tekbow - Abba are/were SUPERB. No worries about liking them.
Moonlighting, not so sure...
(And I speak as a man who has the box set in the house - I was even the fool who bought the wretched thing for the lady of the house...)(First couple of series I didn't mind, but later on... sheesh...)
Not sure how this is all helping Elliot in his quest for guitarist-status though!
EDIT: Oh, I know -
Day Tripper
I Feel Fine
Ticket to Ride
Why Don't We Do It In The Road
There's some songs to be going on with...
-
(http://www.explosm.net/db/files/Comics/Matt/Too-hip-to-function.png)

Cheers Andy - I can play Day Tripper and I even have the tab for the Jimi Hendrix version on the BBC sessions - so I am 1/4 of the way to becoming a guitarist after 13 years of playing (gosh - 13 years and I am still this shite - ---------)
-
Like or loath him, Zakk Wylde got the Ozzy gig and did this after only playing for 3 years... kinda puts natural talent into perspective. :(

I've been playing approximately 32 years, if that's any consolation.... :|

Now you know you boys is being naughty again, don't you?
Say after me:
"I am a guitarist. I will wait at least another month before I make any further self-deprecating noises about this matter on the BKP forums..."
I'm still sure that a large part of being a musician is self-confidence. Start thinking in terms of "making sounds that you like". If you like the sounds coming out of the instrument, try to appreciate that you're onto a winner. A) you'll realise you're already better than you thought, and B) you'll get better faster.

Just checked out both freebird and don't stop believing on youtube. I've never heard either before, was utterly unimpressed with both and haven't missed out by not having heard them in the last 32 years.
Do I need to point out at this point that I've never been into popular culture?
Really? Neither have I, I was a bookish youngster, have never listened to the radio and have only had a telly for a couple years total in my adult life and I've probably heard both 1000 times through no effort of my own. Goodness knows how you've been so lucky.

tl;dr, sorry :?
wrt/ the "20 songs" question, I spent most of my playing time working on my bands compositions, and never bothered trying to do a note-to-note rendition of the (few) covers we ever did. The only time I played in a (very short-lived) cover band we were still trying to come with our own versions.
To make a long story short: I can play my current band's set list (without any backing tracks I mean), that makes for =~ 20 songs, and I far as I'm concerned that's all I need to know to be considered as a guitarist by my bandmates and, as far as I can tell, by the audience too
