Change of mind.... I'm now on the look out for an SG :lol:

I love Les Pauls, but on my limited budget, I wan't to try something different and cover some more/other bases outside my Burny's territory, and have seriously fallen in love with SGs all of a sudden.

So lay it on me... good, cheap SG's...

So far:

-Gibson SG-X
-Loads of various Gibson SG specials on ebay, secondhand in shops e.t.c.
-Gibson Platinum SG, just because it looks so amazing.

What else?!

Woogie got quoted around £400-500 for a Gordon Smith SG Jr I think, I want to get one when I finish uni for the summer as the last terms really short, meaning I'll have loads of loan money left over hopefully :D :D

Well of course you could always go for an Edwards, Orville, Tokai etc SG.

Probably cheaper than a Gibson and you're perhaps less likely to get a dud if you're buying on eBay.

Phil, yeah I've looked briefly at the usual MIJ suspects.

They seem to be significantly less common than the LP equivalents though, and whereas with the LPs, I feel confident that I now at least know what to look for (ish), SGs are/would be new territory. (Not sure if that really makes much of a difference though I guess).

In terms of Gibsons specifically though, are there any models to look out for or avoid?

Speaking of GS guitars, I saw a 1 humbucker flat top LP and I made a mess of my pants. Oh so sexy. And cheap! Stick a BKP in there and I'll make sweet, sweet loving all day long. Damn shame about the pussy 24.75" scale though.

People say the Faded SGs can be pretty bad - I suspect they use their lesser-quality timber and aren't too careful about the quality control.

But Specials, Standards and the special editions like the Voodoo, Gothic and Platinum SGs are all built pretty much the same - they have different cosmetics, pickups and sometimes different woods, but they all have the "rounded SG" neck shape and feel very similar.

There are a ton of SG Specials on the 'bay going cheap (in the US especially). Unlike Les Pauls, even the older models don't seem to be extortionately expensive which is cool. So a 1991 SG Special or even Standard is realistically affordable.

The Japanese SGs seem to have quite chunky necks - something to be aware of. I reckon they use the same ones as they do for LPs.

Gordon Smith build quality can be variable - make sure you try before you buy.

Don't rule out Epiphone SGs, they can be really nice. I gig a Korean '65 reissue and my mate Martin has a Chinese Worn Brown SG. Chuck a nice set of pickups in there and you have great value for money ;)

Excellent, value for money is the name of the game for me at the mo! :D :twisted:

With the Epi's did you have to root around for a decent one (like everyone seems to have to do with every manufacturer these days), or is the quality semi-reliable?

A really chunky neck isn't something I'm after as the LP has that base firmly covered and I'm after something different. So thanks for the heads-up on that. :)

Probably won't be able to even stretch to £500 though unfortunately... looking for really value for money low-hundreds.

Absolutely, I was just echoing what people always say about Gibsons before someone came in ranting about what shitee they are.

You can always find good Gibsons if you look around, but if there are 5 or 6 in a rack they'll all be different. For such a big manufacturer, they seem to do a surprising amount of the work by hand.
