Just got back from seeing Avatar. Great vfx and that sort of thing but the storyline was so cheesy and predictable.. I'm still undecided on 3D. Some bits, like all the HUDs and bits inside the helicopters looked and worked really well but on other bits it all just blurs and I can't focus on anything. I also found it took me a while to "make sense" of the 3D space, then by that time the shot had changed and I had to try and figure out/focus on the space and bits in foreground/background again haha

Get used to it Tom, we're all going to have 3-D TV in the next 10 years.  Apparently.  :?

I just watched The Hangover.  I was expecting it to be OK after all the good reviews, but I'm weird with comedies - very often I hate the ones everyone else likes, and vice versa.  But this was...... good.  I enjoyed it.

Last week watched Inglourious Basterds (what's with the spelling?) ) and District 9 both good. District 9's message of 'we treat immigrants as non-human' is none too subtitle but doesn't stop it being a good watch. The low budget helps give it a feeling of reality that is missing for much Science Fiction. Inglourious Basterds is an alternative WWII history and is littered with Tarantino's usual 2-shot where one character (slowly) 'pulls' information from someone. It's a fun film but is so full of plot hole. I wonder is someone with no knowledge of WWII would realise it's fantasy!

Watched Sherlock Holmes at the weekend, was surprisingly good fun. As with Star Trek it was a bit superficial, but enjoyable.
Watched Role Models on DVD last night, SERIOIUSLY funny, really exceeded my expectations. Some cool 70s rock in the soundtrack as well (and Sean William Scott explaining the lyrics of Love Gun to a 10 year old :D )
Watched La Belle Noiseuse on DVD last week. Really absorbing for a 4 hour film, very gripping and engaging. Of course the fact that the female lead is naked for most of the film doesn't hurt ;)

yeah, i was impressed with role models, too, I mentioned it a month or two back in this thread. It wasn't the best comedy ever, not by a long shot, but after seeing a glut of absolutely terrible comedies, it was refreshing to see something that was even decent.

Watched Moon last night on my Ipod, was supposed to watch 10 mins before bed but stayed up until 1am and watched the whole thing.  Really good film, in fact I woke up and must have worked out some of the loose ends in my sleep and thought 'yeah, that's what happened at that bit'

A clever and enjoyable film....

Also watched the Hangover and Sherlock Holmes recently, both very good and do exactly what they set out to be without being cheesy.  Not classics but definitely watchable.  Had a few proper laugh out loud bits in the Hangover....

I thought it was very funny (funnier than The Hangover, in fact), but the plot was so aimless and at times it would just stop dead, or scenes would be dragged out far too long.  So I enjoyed it, but it tried my patience a bit.

Listening to the commentary it sounds like they were pretty much making it up as they went along, and the dragged-out bits ended up that way because they didn't have the money to do more action scenes!  You do get the impression that Apatow, Rogen & Co make films pretty much for their own enjoyment - which is better than making them for "test audiences".

you know what... i doubt the daybreakers stuff i watched last night had ever seen a test audience.   I just dont know how it would ever get past that stage

i can only assume it only got a cinema release because  of avatar being on at the same time, the film will probably make loads of money just from the passing trade that couldnt get in for avatar

I was supposed to see Daybreakers on Halloween as part of the Frightfest all-nighter, but it got pulled at the last minute (we got Jennifer's Body instead, which was fine).

Maybe they didn't want an audience of horror geeks slagging it off before the official cinema release.

I found Avatar a reasonably entertaining reminder of how much better the broadly similar in theme/ utterly different in execution "District 9" was.
