I watched the Japanese film Audition last night and was massively unimpressed by it.

I'd heard from a few friends that are into Extreme Asian Cinema that ranted and raved about how great a film this is and how far it pushes things etc, but it didn't do much for me.

I also have Itchi The Killer to watch as well, so hopefully I'll enjoy that 1 more

I'm a fan of Audition, but as with all "extreme" movies it either pushes your buttons or it doesn't, I suppose.

There's a bit in Ichi the Killer which grossed me out so much I actually blacked out in the cinema.  That's only happened to me three times in my life (very embarrassing).

BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

I really liked audition as well. I can see how you could get bored by it initially, and it is somewhat weird in places, but the wonderful increasing sense of wrongness throughout the movie is great. Apart from the finally though I wouldn't really class it as extreme, certainly not by modern standards.

Maybe it'd just been hyped up to me so much that I was expecting too much from it?

I'm not saying it was a bad film, just not quite what I was expecting.

There's a bit towards the end that I'm not entirely sure I understood. It goes back to the part where they're in the restaurant but this time all the dialogue is completely different and they keep flicking between locations etc

I suppose with Audition, if youre after gore porn (which I never am; not my thing at all, dont really know why I watched it) then its quite tame, but it is pretty utterly and totally $%&#ed up, considering whatsherfaces traits and habits.

Itchi was just cartoonsih nonesense start to finish. Bored me senseless.

Since we're on the topic of extreme asian films, Visitor Q is probably the most $%&#ed up film I've seen. If you can stand to watch it, which I really dont recommend you do. The only thing you'll get out of it is a couple of hours not back. Its not gory or anything its just disgusting and leaves you going 'huh? wtf was the point in that?'.

Perhaps. Never seen that.

If lost in translation has incest, necrophilia and a bizarre preoccupation with feces then yeah, I suppose so.

I was trying not to be too predictable.....

I have Visitor Q on DVD but never got round to watching it (along with at least two other Takashi Miike films I can think of).  I suppose I really ought to.

I wouldn't say I was after 'gore porn', maybe just something a bit different from the normal cr@p I watch

Maybe I just have a harder stomach than my friends that saw it and recommended it as being 'Stupidly violent and OTT'. That or they're just wusses

Visitor Q is another 1 I keep hearing about, as well as Old Boy, so I'll wait and see if I ever get around to watching them. It's taken me about 5 years for Audition, and I've owned Itchi The Killer for about 4 years and not watched it yet!

Is it the UK DVD?  If it is, it's cut by over 3 minutes but I don't think that includes the scene which freaked me out!

Brow, Old Boy is a good film. It has some $%&#edupness to it but its more than intrigueing and well made enough for it to make up for that. Its certainly not a similar film to itchi or visitor q. It has some crossovers with audition in theme (without giving too much away) but it has a very different tone.
