in general I love films with very restricted settings and locations.

Exam - I read Philly's post and thought: This is a movie for me and spot on. Really enjoyed it. Reminds me a lot of a Spanish movie called "el método" which also is really great.

Have you seen (another Spanish film) Fermat's Room?  I think you might like it!

Haven't seen this one, but thanks for the advice. I'll look into it for sure.

Hot Tub Time Machine - Better than the reviews say. It's a stupid and very flawed film but there is something likeable about the cast and their journey back to the '80s. The ending made no sense but (if you're look for some brainless fun) worth a watch.

Mega Piranha - Tiffany (yes that Tiffany, of "I Think We're Alone Now") plays a scientist(!) battling a shoal of piranha which have somehow mutated so they've grown to the size of buses and are able to leap hundreds of feet through the air....

Terrible acting, terrible FX and Tiffany couldn't even be bothered to go on a diet to film her role.  I wish I could say it's so bad it's good, but it's just boring rubbish.  Makes Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus starring Deborah Gibson (yes that Deborah Gibson) seem like a work of genius.

Philly, next on your list has to be Stonehenge Apocalypse, I saw it in HMV, but haven't had the nerve to pick it up yet, could be the worst film ever, or just one of the worst.

Great rating on IMDB = http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1587807/

I think I hate being indecisive.

Just got back from watching Paul. Perfect Friday night fodder. I found it very watchable and chuckled quite a lot.

That "Mega Piranha" movie is just something for me as I've formed an "Animal Disaster Movie Club" with some collegues from work.

We have only met once so far, but we watched a classic and a neo-classic - The birds and Anaconda  :D

You'll be wanting to check out Sharktopus, Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus, Mega Shark vs. Crocosaurus and Mega Python vs. Gatoroid as well, then.

wow i didn't realise people actually watched those films. they're on sci-fi like all the time, i normally just laugh at the title, and move on...

Are they actually any good? (maybe that's a stupid question)

No, they're complete and utter garbage.

But sometimes I like to watch films which require zero mental effort.

Skyline -

FFS. Dreadfull. Sole redeaming feature: SPOILER

We lose. Or thats rather strongly implied. As it would be, if aliens turned up on out doorstep with less than pleasant intentions, its absurd to think that we could do anything at all to beat them. And the ending is the most utterly ridiculous thing I've ever seen.

/spoiler

Splice -

I really enjoyed it. It wasnt the horror/fly ripoff I expected it to be by a long shot. More of a (clumsy, but hey its a film) look at human nature and its various influences (nature/genetics, nurture) and morality. Touted as a 'science has gone crazy: more like frankenstien than the fly, really. Good stuff.

Want to see: battle LA. Cant go wrong with an alien invasion. Unless its skyline.

I just watched Splice as well.  I'm not sure I enjoyed it exactly, but I was very impressed - it's all very well done, convincing FX too despite the low budget.  I'm not usually a fan of Adrien Brody, but he and Sarah Polley do a very good job of keeping your sympathy even when their behaviour is pretty dubious.  I definitely felt the Frankenstein connection, and I guess it takes that twisted version of parent/child dependence and eventual role reversal to a whole new place...

Vincenzo Natali is a director to keep an eye on, I think.
