my wife was recently left a dvd collection in a will.  we have just finished unpacking - looks like i am going to be busy for a while

That's probably a couple of my bookcases worth. ...I have 5... Blame that in my formative years I had a weekend job at a video shop. That got me hooked. Then did the Laserdisc thing, finally selling them all and moving on to DVDs. I have thousands of the things.
When you´re racing, it's life. Anything that happens before or after is just pies.

Watched Piranha last night - the 2010 version with Kelly Brooks breasts in it.

Jeez - I expected it to be trash, but it's been a while since I've seen anything quite so dire - OK, it was TRYING to be cr@p, but it's rare to see a film so completely living up to its own aspirations.

It's dreadful, isn't it?  The attempts at humour never rise above the level of "look, titties!" and there are no characters you even remotely give a toss about (actually, Kelly Brook was one of the few I didn't completely hate).  It's all so utterly stupid.

I think we're getting old, Mark.

I watched the History Boys the other night.  Best film I've seen for a long time (although being an Alan Bennett script, it's a bit high-brow)
Advice worth what you just paid for it.

Watched Machete the other day... Gloriously, unbelievably silly and very good fun.

Highlight:
Doctor: did you know the human intestine is 60 foot long?
5 minutes and a fight scene later
Danny Trujo cuts open a man's stomach, runs off with his intestines and uses them to swing out a window and into a window on the floor below.
Feline Custom, Fender MIJ mustang bass
Orange rocker 30
VHII and Mississippi queen

Dard Divorce. One of the very few movies I've seen with no redeeming qualities whatsoever. None.
Utterly dire.

just watched rise of the planet of the apes - i will start by saying i am a fan of the originals from sunday afternoons on channel 4.  the first film is awesome, second poor, 3rd is odd but a childhood memory i cherish.  4th was never on tv as a kid at a time i could watch because its the most violent and 5th i hardly remember even though i have seen it a few times since.

1 and 4 were always the best.  Tim burton remade 1 and all i remember is the stupid ending.  But this new version of 4 is pretty damn good!

it is the perfect prequel to the original charlton heston film and a good re imagining of the 4th film.  squeezing the damn dirty ape line in was a bit obvious (damn you malfoy!).  one of the things i remember most about the 4th original film was the tension in the drum music - which made a nice appearance, all be it toned down and only for a minute or so,  in the new film

only problem, Conquest of the planet of the apes had a clear message about segregation, abuse and slavery.  Rise never tries to match the original in message, just the story arc - i guess we dont like films to have a message anymore

also watched Super (no, not super 8).  A bit like kickass, but not.  i quite liked it, but some of it really didnt work.  Ellen Page is more annoying than ever and its pleasing to see her perish.

sorry philly :(

tonight was four lions and the wrestler.  2 films i have put off watching in spite of constantly being told how good they are.

yep, both awesome in completely different ways.

I never got the whole wrestler and black swan as part of the same thing that darren claims - but they really do accompany each other quite well

I liked The Wrestler - liked all Aronofsky's films so far in fact.  Haven't seen Black Swan yet, but the Blu-ray is in the post.  :)

Limitless - Much most of a traditional thriller than the sci-fi film I was expecting but not a bad effort. Bradley Cooper was good but I didn't like the ending... worth a watch.

Rango - Quirky animated film with some amazing character art. Some of the 'oddball' stuff doesn't work but the humour and visuals are good.

Another Year - Mike Leigh film full of simple human emotion... a must see.

Season of the Witch - Not a good film but I do like this genre so won't give it such a bad review as most. Cage's performance however is terrible.

Monsters - More of a road movie than a traditional monster flic. Good film with a genuine sense of reality.

Bunny and the Bull – A ‘The Mighty Boosh’ -esk movie with some good scenes but just not funny enough.

Max and Mary - Animated film about a long distance friendship between two of societies outsiders. A remarkable film - a must see.

The Adjustment Bureau - Mix of thriller, romance and sci-fi doesn't quite work. A descent film but too ordinary.
A generous heart, kind speech and a life of service & compassion are the things which renew humanity

Does anyone know of any good noir movie DVD collections? I've found some but they aren't that substantial.

Can you play Region 1 DVDs?

The Warner box sets are particularly good.

Season of the Witch - Much like Plexi Ken, I think I felt charitable towards this because I like the genre.  It's not a good film, but I liked the Austrian and Hungarian locations, I liked the fact they were prepared to give their dodgy CGI monsters plenty of screen time, and I have to like a film which has undead monks in it!  Nic Cage doesn't give one of his truly great loony performances, but he does get to sport some genuinely astounding wigs....

Hobo with a Shotgun - A tribute to early '80s films like Vigilante and The Exterminator, the style also reminded me of Street Trash.  It's ultra-violent in a deliberately silly way and tries (but mostly fails) to be funny.  Rutger Hauer's OK, but he could do this stuff in his sleep.  I think if I'd seen the same film in 1983 I would've loved it, but now.... meh.
