For me The Wire is still the high point of TV. I haven't seen anything that has bettered it just yet.

Homicide: Life on the Street and Oz for me.

I've heard many good things about The Wire but (as you've probably gathered  ) I can't be bothered to watch US TV series any more.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds

You should watch it Philly! It wasn't too well received in some parts of the US (at least I don't think it was). A sure sign that it is not your usual run of the mill American series.

After your comment I'm wondering what will happen first out of these three:

  • You complete your strat build
  • You watch all 5 series of The Wire
  • Hell Freezes Over

I know where my money is!
I think I hate being indecisive.

Realistically, Ian:

  • Hell Freezes Over
  • I complete my Strat build
  • I watch all 5 series of The Wire

There's just no way I'd ever find the time (unless I get made redundant....  :| )

Oh and Wez's missus reminded me of this: Spaced

thats where she gets it from. - unfortunately its the only thing she knows about Babylon 5   and refuses to watch it.

She is normally pretty good with sci-fi.

I agree with Ian on the wire, no other Tv series quite like it and i must watch it again at some point.  Will get right on it when Philly finishes that guitar

woops long post

Hear hear!

But then I tend to think nearly all recent American series are like that.  Including 24, incredibly.

So I don't watch 'em.

yeah it's getting very annoying

I mean I still watch 'em, but still

I liked babylon 5

Babylon 5 had a plan. And brought plans back to TV shows. Then lost threw them out again.

I dont really see how the main theme of a show can be 'it doesnt make sense'.

never watched babylon 5, but i agree regarding lost (i assume you're talking about lost, anyway  ). I watched it assuming it'd all make sense in the end. the ending made less sense than it did before it was explained :?

Babylon 5 was fantastic. Shame that doubts over renewal mean the final episodes of the 4th and 5th seasons feel odd, but overall the heavy plotting from start to finish was great and meant there was never a "they're just making it up" vibe.

yeah. in one sense it's hard to blame them- they sorta have to hedge their bets in case it's cancelled- and having watched a couple of things recently where, if anything, they were gearing up to raise the stakes in the second series, only for it to be cancelled before they got to make it, that's even more annoying than feeling a show has had all the loose ends wound up in case it was cancelled, and then they have to start unravelling it all again when it gets renewed!

Of course, some shows only have themselves to blame- they make tons of standalone episodes, and avoid letting anything happen in the bigger ongoing plot, only then to remember, "Oh cr@p we only have 2 episodes left and we might get cancelled at the end of this series, how the heck do we tie it all up?!?!?!" Don't have much sympathy when that happens.

Same goes for all the Lost-a-likes (Flash Forward et-al).

Flash Forward was actually really good- it was a bit like Lost, but nowhere near as bad, and at least it felt like you were getting somewhere (at least, until it got cancelled).

It was actually one of the ones I was talking about, getting cancelled just as it was getting good (the event is another one).

Of course, Band of Brothers is also up there. I did try watching The Pacific but to be honest found it a little boring after 4 or 5 episodes.

+1

I made it until the penultimate episode of the pacific, but it was nowhere near as good as band of brothers.

I actually think chuck's up there with my favourite series of all time. I mean it's not citizen kane, but there's something about it that i just really like.

Aside from it, probably seinfeld.

I've never seen Band of Brothers, but just ordered it on ebay after all the talk of how good it is.  Been meaning to watch it anyway!

Stunning TV. Everything the likes of Shaving Ryans Privates should have been.

Another I'd recommend is Generation Kill. I made the mistake of watching it before The Hurt Locker. It made THL look like a bloody Michael Bay film, I really have no idea why that film was hyped like it was. GK is superb in it's realism. There's a lot of driving around with nothing happening intersected by sudden moments of violence/confusion/mayhem. There's some harsh/shocking stuff in that show...
When you´re racing, it's life. Anything that happens before or after is just pies.

Just to add to the list of modern American TV classics - Six Feet Under and Deadwood. Though the lack of a real ending for Deadwood is a mark against it. Six Feet Under has the best ending episode of any series I can remember.

Deadwood rocks! At least the two first seasons. The third one seems to drown a little in all the complicated politics. At least to me.

I eventually got into The Wire but for me Breaking Bad is the best thing on tv. Loving The Sopranos as well but I still haven't finished it.

Getting through season 2 of Parks & Recreation in my breaks at work and it's brilliant.

We Need to Talk About Kevin - I've been looking forward to watching this for quite a while and wasn't disappointed. Lynne Ramsay drags out and builds the tension/dread in a masterful piece. Tilda Swinton is amazing, dialogue is sparse but the emotion is written all over her face. Superior film, a must see.

If the Wire clicks with you, Philly, the problem won't be finding time to watch it, but finding reasons not to.

Honestly, that wouldn't be a problem for me!

I have real trouble sitting still in front of the TV for the duration of one programme, never mind watching multiple episodes of the same programme, I find that absolutely impossible.

Just watched the original 3 Star Wars movies on DVD.  It's always good to see them every 5 years or so but I wasn't impressed with the changes they have made and the additional CGI.

And definitely not impressed with the changes at the end of return of the jedi, that was just daft :?

They should have just improved the image quality rather than changing the films.
