Some recent watches:

Avengers. Probably old news. Has anyone thats even vaguely interested not seen it? I doubt it. But still, its probably my favourite action film to date. Its a film that knows what it is. It doesnt try to get clever, but isnt utterly retarded, the characters are all as likeable or dislikable as they're meant to be (except captain america, whos pretty dull), the humours pitched right, the shallow-but-required character development is present and pleasant enough but doesnt get in the way of the inevitable, awesome, glorious magnificent action.

Grade: Badass.

Hunger games. Not half bad, I suppose. The satirical aspect of it is clearly what its aiming for (eventually  at least, inevitably there will be sequels), which it makes pretty obvious, but it does well in telling that aspect of the story from the perspective of the unrealistically decent and good little village girl thats been made to come to the big city and participate in the game.

Grade: Approved.

The cabin in the woods. Amusing daftness. It hit a spot, tickled an itch, I liked it.

Grade: Passes the time well enough

The mist. Pretentious social-commentary-agenda laden contrived cr@p. (Half life + lord of the flies)/2 with 5% of the intelligence of the dumbest half of that. I think I was dumber by the end of the film. The ending was harsh as $%&#, in terms of what happened, but all the screaming made me laugh. Thomas Jane, you can do better than that, what the hell are you playing at.

Grade: I want 2 hours back.

Prometheus. $%&#ing prometheus. I hated it. It made no sense whatsoever, it was drenched in religious subtext, actual text, imagery and generally had a neon sign that said GODGODGODGODGODGOD with which it beat you over the head. A bar-stewardised mashup of greek mythology, the bible and dante filtered through the mind of that Ancient Aliens tw@t with the hair. Also, it made no sense. At all. The best I could figure, it was all because they were mad at us for killing jesus. I thought that was mental, so I looked it up and was disappointed to find I was right. Script was bollocks, all acting was bargain basement except Michael Fassewhatsit, who was pretty awesome to be fair. And it made no sense.

Grade: Cannot unsee.

Sherlock homes a game of shadows. I liked it, because I liked the first one, and this is the same film.

Grade: deja vous.

Underworld awakening. It is what it is and its good for what it is.

Grade: Shiny boobs.

Kate Beckinsale in tight leather. She would make Prometheus awesome.

Better.

Its got a very $%&#ing long way to go to awesome.

Underworld awakening was a better film to begin with anyway. And its very much not a good film.

Agree, felt like half a film to me (awakenings) and seemed a bit, well, plotless... But it has Kate, vampires and warewolves. I have the same problem with the Resident Evil films. Pants, but a total guilty pleasure.

But no, Prometheus was shite on a level I did not anticipate. I wish I'd known it was written by the tool who made up Lost as it went along. It's stunning to look at, don't get me wrong. But like Avatar and Terminator 2. Peel away the prettiness and it's just a shiny turd underneath.

I like T2 and avatar is a masterpiece compared to prometheus.

It suffers from 'The people that made it have their heads so far up their arses they can see their spleen' syndrome.

I went to a screening of the newly restored Lawrence of Arabia today.

There's a film which really has to be seen on a big screen.  Bollocks to iPads.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

I essentially gave up two minutes in when a guy sprints to see archaeology. In case it's going to vanish in two minutes after having been there for 10,000 years. They never explain how someone managed to draw on a rock that was under a glacier at the time, either. Ho hum.

In a  film with many, many flaws your issue is with the idea somebody can get excited about their work!

I actually quite enjoyed Prometheus - ok, not so much the actual film which was full of stupidity and plot holes - end ended up seeming very incomplete.  but the whole experience was good - which includes ripping it apart afterwards.   it did at least leave me interested where they are going with this series.  I will watch it again at some point - with all the extra scenes and re-judge.

I saw looper today and thought it was fantastic.  again it has some massive plot holes and time travel paradoxes going on but its told well enough for it to not matter too much.

I'm an archaeologist, I'm ludicrously excitable about ancient sites, but it's so utterly, utterly silly. It was a facepalm moment in the opening moments. It was written off pretty much then. And nothing makes it better after that.

Yes!  It's one of the greatest British films ever made.

OK - it's on my list.

I hadn't seen The Great Escape until fairly recently. Lots of classics I've not yet seen.
