I keep thinking if I sat down with an SG I would spend more time keeping it from falling forward (neck first) than play anything. Plus Gibson are tards-in their own right I guess- in having rounded cricket bat necks. And even for most of their LPs too.

The only SG that I would like would be the Special.

I do really like the idea of a neck-through SG for extra strength, but I don't like the look of the visible neck laminations with the body wings either side.  It would be fine with a solid colour though.

thats why mine is going to be black, and mostly nickel hardware too ... those casino style p-ups in my avatar infact!!!

and just to clarify - i dont think SG's are bad as musical instruments go... i just dont want my neck joins to be like that.  Same with the flying V's and to a lesser extent the les pauls - there just seems to be better ways of doing it.

Some of us like those cricket bat (or is it baseball bat?) necks....

We do our Sg style joints the same - the Gothic Warpig has a sculted join and the body is a bit thicker , which aids strength and balance

Sounds good.  I've often contemplated getting a slightly thicker-bodied SG; it would allow for use of push-pull pots, too.  Wouldn't really want any extra weight though - maybe korina would be a bit lighter than mahogany?

No offence taken Jonny, I just wanted to make the point   .

One of the main reasons I like Gibsons - despite their mixed reputation - is that their fatter neck shapes are some of the most comfortable out there, for me personally.  I've had several Hamers which are better guitars, really, but they can't get the neck shapes right (IMO).

SG's rock!   :D
Had a couple break the headstock off, but only when in the post. Easy solution....detune the guitar when shipping.
You'd have to really tw*t the thing hard to cause a break at the body end, and I try not to treat my guitars like that.

I've never had a Gibson SG that was neck heavy, only an Epi version.
I love them cos they are more alive and resonant than an LP, and have a wirier, more violin-like tone.

EDIT: Avatar updated to reflect SG love. Sorry Ted!
(Still want a Byrdland though.)

That looks like a chunky join! is it not possible to have an SG like that then? or is that what ESP have done with their more costly vipers?

Hunter, I am a LP lover, but SGs to me are uncomfortable to play sitting down, the top horn is too high, and it sits far too far forward, is that easy to get over?? (somehow I am fine with a V though :? )

Sorry for stealing a Feline pic!

The necks of the vipers continue into the body sometimes all the way up to the bridge, giving a superb secure join.

Yeah the neck on my Pearl feels really nice, when I go back to my Epiphone after playing that, it feels weird like theres no substance or feel to it. Very flat and odd.

Hunter, thanks for giving me SG gas again  :x :P This is still on my local music shops website, been there for ages but I dont know if its still in the shop. £600 seems a bit steep for a Tokai though

Depends which model it is.  If it's an SG-75 or lower number, it's overpriced, but if it's an SG-155 (it probably isn't  :P  ) it has a one-piece Honduras body, nitro finish, CTS pots, top-quality hardware... £600 would be a steal.

I've been wanting an SG since forever. I just never found one I liked the feel of.  :? Oh well, someday.

Well I start to have HEAVY GAS on SG's... but I would not buy a Gibby, would build one stronger, instead...

I love the looks of SGs but i play so poorly on them due to the thicker necks and also the fact that the neck seems to be so long, i always end up a fret or two away from where i want to be lol.
