Why does Macca make the news?

Something I thought of today was that many people on the forum would clearly not "get" the Beatles and I don't mean to sound patronising but it is before their time and not relevant to them and that is fair enough. They will never mean the same to anyone who was not there at the time. The  Beatles were about more than the music ( though their music would have been enough) and the doors they broke down for those that followed should not be underestimated. Not many artists before them wrote their own material ( a few did but the majority played and sang what they were told to).  Having said that, I fully understand that they are not to everyone's taste( I know people who, to this day, divide themselves either into Beatles or Stones camps). OK, Paul can be a bit twee but, guys, he is nearly 65. Maybe he should retire, who knows, but that is up to him. Clearly the audiences are there. As for his post Beatle output. Yes it is patchy but there are some great songs there too but don't listen, just read the cr*p in the papers and watch what is on the news after all, that is what matters isn't it? Judge him by the media and forget his musical legacy. To me, however, he has nothing to prove. I most certainly would not demean other peoples tastes in music just becasue I didn't like it.

I like their rock 'n roll stuff in their early days.

But yeah, I'm in the Stones camp.

I think it all went wrong for the Beatles when they all went India with sitars and swami's.

Now now lads play nicely!

I didn't mean cos you listen to metal your immature.
Someone hit upon it, the anger thing does subside a lot plus your life experiences and who you meet will introduce you to other styles of music. I like some heavy metal but I'm not naive enough to come on a guitar players forum and start running down The Beatles and Paul McCartney as that is immature IMO and it's just resentment. He and his band put Britain on the world map as far as Music is concerned and all the other bands and styles owe them that.
Just have a listen to some of their music, be honest, is it really that shitee that you have to post your opinions about it in here when you know it's going to offend other forum members? There are lots bands out that I can think of that really are terrible and deserve to be slagged off, but not The Beatles, no way.
Not to be compared with Oasis either.

I mean my sig does suggest somewhat that I do like Metal and playing it on my guitars!

Well, making a thread to slag off mccartney is fairly bad form, but there are two ways you can look at that:

1: Ignorance of musical and cultural contribution.

2: Personal taste of the OP.

Or combination thereof.

I'm not a beatles fan personally, and can see where hes coming from: a dislike of the beatles without acknowledging their contribution and influence.

Theres nothing whatsoever you can say about the former. You cant offer a post-dated cheque of "maybe you WILL like it", and you cant tell the person to like it (well, you can tell them if you want, but it wont work). But you can point out that its a pretty ignorant statement. The way I see it; I dont like the beatles music, but much of what I listen to lives in the wake of everything that they have done, so the beatles themselves get something of a free pass.

I realise you can't make people like the beatles but to slag of McCartney and mock him is just naive in the extreme and I would also say they don't really understand music or its roots and history.

Yeah, I agree.

I never slagged him off though ;)

Yeah as 38th says I dont really "get" the beatles, they're a bit before my time and their presence doesnt seem to have much relevance to me. I was into them quite a bit for a short period of time but I got bored of them quite quickly, I think its the singing especially whoever it is on "Why dont we do it in the road". Annoying voice! However I do like a few of their songs just because they're well written and catchy :)

One thing I wish he would do is stop going on about how 'everybody should be a vegetarian'  for whatever reason happens to be trendy at the time...

I'm firmly in the Stones camp, but finally went to see McCartney in 2003 when he was touring the USA, on the basis that I might not get the chance again.  All the Beatles stuff he did was great (though I am more of a Lennon fan), and some Wings was good, but some of the new stuff was almost Eurovision style.  However his singing and playing were still great.

The other intersting thing was that we could see his teleprompter and everything was scripted (even the 'ad-libs').  My friend went to see him again later and it was the same show (same jokes and runing order).
So many pickups, so little time
