SGmypod said it, I just agreed!

Can I (horsehead)  just say EVH is over-rated & anybody that has been in Metallica

Cliff Burton and Rob Trujillo overrated?

They're absolutely incredible bassists.

Wasn't talking bassists

I don't know why I keep forgetting to put Brian May in these lists.

I like his playing, technique and style, I like his sound, everything.

Why do I keep forgetting him then?

I struggle with the "overrated" thing - how should we define overrated?

someone liked/loved by everyone else but whom you hate (or at least, maybe not hate, but can't see the attraction).

I'd definite "overrated" as a person liked by many but not by me, making the person overrated in my opinion. That makes overratedness entirely subjective, as it should be.

ah, beaten to it.

Speaking of incredible bassists, Stu Hamm slayed at the Joe Satriani concert last night. I've never seen anyone shred on bass like that before.

Stu Hamm is AWESOME.

agreed. :)

In no particular order:

Mikael Akerfedlt.
Paco de Lucia.
Guthrie Govan.
Al di Meola.
Buckethead.

Honourable mentions to...
John Williams.
John Petrucci.
the guy from Necrophagist (Suicmez?).

I would never pick Brian May as a favourite guitar player, but I do like a fair amount of Queen stuff - Shear Heart Attack is a phenominal album.  Everything else they did pales in comparison.

(edit)... and ahem, while we're at it - why is there no single coil to get the Brian May tone?

he once said he was better than Clapton..this was when Eric was at the top of his game...and any live concert of him now he just goes of and plays random notes...badly

I've never heard anything like that before - if anything he has always seemed very humble about his abilities as a guitarist.

Best duos:

Bernie Marsden/Micky Moody
Chris De Garmo/Michael Wilton
Dave Murray/Adrian Smith
Rudolph Schenker /Matthias Jabs
Glen Tipton/KK Downing
Brad Gillis/Geoff Watson (Night Ranger)
Paul Stanley /Bruce Kulick (although I'd chose Stanley /Frehley on a good day)
Scott Gorham/ Brian Robertson (or whoever else was in Lizzy)

And this is mainly based on bands that I enjoy listening to

and these two...

* Hanneman/King - you can't go past these guys, though admittedly they owe alot to Tipton/Downing.

and these two weren't too shabby either...

* Friedman/Mustaine
