When are Gibson gonna give up?

I think twice when slaggin off a brand because it's not nice when you own a guitar by that company that you love and it's getting ripped to pieces - been there, got the t-shirt ( Hi MDV <3 )... but you have to draw a line somewhere and have some honesty about the short comings too.

We can each like what we like, and I have sufficient respect for my fellow guitarists to assume that they have the testicular fortitude to not be personally offended on hearing something derorgatory about something they like, and to make their own judgements based on their own experiences and information they have gathered. I just bought my epiphone les paul standard (copy) they did have in the shop a very striking (nice top) Les paul traditional which I also liked the look of but at almost £1300 more list and I was very tempted thinking well I may as well get a guitar for life. However then I thought hmmm maybe I should bank that and get a custom later.

 I also started thinking if I have a professionally fitted new nut, setup and fret dress and then subsequently fit bkps how far away might I be from the sound?

The Epiphone and a PRS singlecut that I finally chose between sounded way better than about 8 others but what always surprised me was that this would often also apply to Gibsons - I know I don't play yet but I have a reputation as a amazing negotiator so I have been helping friends buy guitars since late 1970s. Everytime we went and tried several to over a dozen - also in the mid 80s - early 90s and late 2000 there would be a couple a way better than the rest. I used to think that odd on instruments costing several hundred pounds (hehe isn't inflation great).

I reserve my hate for Liverpool FC and traffic wardens, certainly not the makers of decent guitars, no matter what their motive (which funnly enough is to make money in the capitalist market they operate).

As far as the Gibson debate goes, if I pick up a guitar and like it I really don't give two hoots what others might feel as for it's value, look, sound etc. I also don't really care too much about what the companies motives are as long as I'm happy with it!

I have tried to tell people how to do it but two examples - friend wanted a new car he had already got the best deal he possibly could and was ready to order. The model he actually wanted was one above the one he was ready to order and too expensive he wanted it for the custom colour and more powerful engine. I told him I would see what I could do - another £800 off not quite enough but they wouldn't go another hundred I knew I had them at the bottom - then I said how about we cash in the 11 months car tax on the trade in - different pot was in the equation but he could go for that shows up different on the books so wam £900 extra on top of the 9% discount he had- this was before the current car bargains in the boom.

A guitar one acoustics £399 retail guitar was on sale at £289 special ended up with guitar for £249 with free hardcase same one they gave with the £1200 model in that range, free fitting on a fishman and 3 packs of spare strings. The fishman was extra - matrix infinity £130

Sometimes I have been offered a discount when I havn't even asked and on one occasion after I had already said I want two of those !!

Can't post tips here those sly shopkeepers may be watching for them  :lol:

gibson still exists just because les pauls and SGs are some of the coolest guitars around. period. i played some unplayable and very costy les paul and have got a "cheap" (you know the guitar of the week story...) les paul that's nearly perfect and a "cheap" SG (the same) that's very, very good. quality and feel vary on a wide range...
i'd buy (and i did it) an ibanez or an esp on the web (i bought also an epiphone without having ever tried it and it looks like i was quite lucky) but i'd never do it with a gibson...
it's mad that a 3000 € gibson made by much vaunted usa craftsmanship can be much worse than a 300 € ibanez made in indonesia (that comes with a complete QC check signed by the VARIOUS guys who actually did it), but these are the rules of the market... if you can sell a name you don't have to worry about the actual quality.
fenders are no different, i don't like strats (and i'll never play a tele even if i'm sure they're great...), but played some (and owned one!), and quality is quite stochastic...

I imagine most shop keepers have heard every trick in the book.

In my opinion I find it difficult to believe that a retailer would have offered/accepted that deal on a guitar as they would have basically been making no profit and maybe even a loss. The case bit I can understand as a case for a £1200 guitar shouldn't really cost anymore than a case for a 'cheaper' guitar - it's only the vintage ones that go for silly money. Fair play if it happened but it sounds a little far fetched to me.

In my experience (and I have bit) retailers (guitar shops in particular) will only really offer a discount/accept a deal in three scenarios 1) they will still make a profit, 2) they are desperate to get rid of stock that hasn't sold for a considerable amount of time and have new stock coming in, 3) they are closing down and need to recover as much £ as possible.

Just my opinions of course.
