always had a thing for zvex, i am looking forward to it but i must admit that a control thats says "crackle okay" around it does make me wonder

Sorry Wez!

The crackle okay thing is a 'feature' on a lot of his pedals. Basically you just get a crackling sound when you turn the knob - doesn't affect the sound when playing through it though!

Damn you Ian - I've ordered a Distortron too   I couldn't resist at that price, Sounds Great didn't have any in stock and couldn't confirm pricing, and the Mastotron is £119 somewhere else  :o  Cheapest BoR was £129, so that's a saving of £60 to lose the boost and add gain/bass toggles.  Awesome!

I sold my BoR because of the bass issue, but I really liked the pedal.  Can't wait to get the Distorton now.  I'm planning on using it into my JTM45 for blues gigs  :D

Mastotron here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHgyS1h0oII

maybe its just my difference in taste, but that is some fugly fuzz, I'd never pay for that! ok i'm assuming the pedal can do more than just in the vid but the vid itself just didn't sell the product to me, which is strange, cause I love the fuzz factory.

i've actually spent the last week listening to demos of every single damn pedal site out there and maybe my ears have gotten too judgmental :)

So the crackle is normal?

And here I go spraying the pots of my BOR clone half to death with Servisol.

Yep, the crackle is completely normal and intended.  Only affects the pot when you move it, as Ian says.

What a fine suggestion  Pretty much all of my guitar related stuff has been bought from GV, maybe they should put me on their payroll!

I'm a bit undecided between the distortron and the mastotron. I want a fuzz for some Frusciante/Hendrix tones so the mastotron might do some of this. I also want another distortion/drive pedal but am not sure how different/similar the distortron will be to my fulltone OCD. Decisions, decisions. :?

How do you rate the OCD Ian?  I'm waiting for Sounds Great to get them in along with the BB plus so I can try one out.

I like it a lot Tom - it's pretty simple and has some great sounds. Happy to let you borrow it for a while if you want - PM me if you do.

My Distortron is here!

Very quick first impression is that it's a more flexible Box of Rock as I thought it would be.  Woohoo!  It sounds a bit transistor-y so it needs a nice warm amp to go into, but the Box of Rock was the same.

Good stuff!

Regarding the "crackle OK" thing. I've installed Zvex SHO units in guitars and have changed the gain pot to make it more compatible with an install through the guitar body top and in each case the crackle disappeared. I used a pot with a plastic shaft so I'm inclined to believe that the crackle is due to an earthing problem between the shaft and the pot body. I've experienced a very similar crackle when using push-pull pots/switches with metal knobs; the fix for that has always been plastic knobs or metal knobs with nylon inserts
