New set of wiring gubbins
« on: February 16, 2011, 07:03:22 PM »
Hey all,

Pretty new to wiring, did my own set of Nailbombs a while back and thankfully that worked.

My 7 string is pretty buggered, wiring-wise. Pups are Duncans but I want to change them to BKP's. The signal is being lost in the current wiring at the moment, everything looks okay as far as solder integrity goes...

So what I'm going to do is order my new BKP's and also grab myself some new pots and a new switch. I'm after 1 tone, 1 vol and 1 3-way switch, what can you guys recommend as the best bunch of gubbins to go for?

I may also need a pointer to a diagram somewhere, heh.

Firstly are you going for any fancy wiring or just straight up humbucking?

CTS or Alpha would be my recommendation pot wise and switches i have no idea i have always just used whatevers in the guitar.

Are you finally getting the painkiller?

Yeah since I learned about conversion necks for different scale lengths, I can finally see a cheaper way of getting the sounds I want, hehe. So PK and longer neck it is. Straight up Humbucking too.  ;)

youll have no problem just using the bkp 2 hum 1 vol/3way schematic then

You only need 2 conductor but i would recommend 4 as then if you later decide you want extra wiring options its always there plus it helps if you ever come to sell it.

And for humbuckers you want 500k at least i think youll probably need short leg too (its a schecter isnt it?)

Nah, Jackson, it's this but with a Floyd Rose (which, again, I will be brassing up and trem-stopping with another brass L plate...nom nom nom toooone!)

So hopefully will sound like a monster when I've modded it properly. Getting into this Frankenguitar lark.  :D

Pay attention to the shaft length and whether it is ribbed or smooth (I'm sure Afgan will be here to make a comment about that particular statement) when you order the pots.
Advice worth what you just paid for it.

If you're looking for wiring diagrams then Seymour's yer man

http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/wiring-diagrams/

and I keep linking Deaf Eddie because of his PDF about unknown colour codes on pickup wires

http://www.deaf-eddie.net/drawings/drawings.html

and this is usually right but occasionally wrong so approach with caution

Ok, I have a pair of new BKP pots and a pair of BKP caps too...but I might be thick, as I can't find a relevant wiring diagram on the site?

It's for a set of nailbombs, 1 tone, 1 vol and a three way switch. no coil tapping or fancy stuff, just that plain ol setup.

Any ideas? I'd need a diagram that also includes the caps.  :?

change the north start for the red wire

the green & whites should be taped off together

and the black and bare go to ground!
