Grinding Gibson V
« on: July 29, 2011, 12:22:35 PM »
Its payday and i have my last thoughts before ordering.

Its for my gibson flying V which has become my main guitar for most of the music i do.
I play grindcore, swedish old school death metal and converge'ish stuff sometimes.

I tune to C# - Drop B with everly 12-60 strings

Gear is use is: Boss Hm-2(japan), everything set to max except gain which i have on 1. So its kind of a booster.
I dont use it in everything, but i use it pretty much.

Head: Line 6 Spider Valve head W/ 2 12ax7's & 4 6L6's.  - On the lookout for a Peavey 6505.
Cab: Mesa Rectifier 4x12 oversized.

So what im really after is a pickup which can cut through the immense wall of grind that the hm-2 makes. But still it shall be gainy enough to be able to play fast(230 bpm+) without i have to struggle to downpick every note equally hard. i noticed that i usually boost these frequencies 1,4 kHz & 85 hz. So i guess i want something with both a boost in upper and lower mids. I've been over all the spectrum recently, and im still in doubt. I've not had the money for a new pickup in a long time, so thats why i have been boggling this much over this issue :P

I'm probably one of the least qualified persons here to answer your question, but anyway: the Nailbomb might possibly work fine for you - hot but not over the top, grinding tone with very present and abrasive mid/upper-mids, tight and not prominent but deep lows (so you have it if you're ooking for it), and stay very well defined under hi gain.

Now that's about the only BKP in the contemporary range I've played (as far as I'm concerned the Crawler really belongs to the vintage-hot range) and I'm not into metal so hopefully some of the metalhead regulars will chime in
Have: Crawlers, BGF 50/52s, Mules, ABomb, RiffRaff
Had : Slowhands (n&m), Trilogy (b)

I don't have first-hand experience with any BKP other than Black Dogs, but I know that the low end on Vs are not to par, for me. Depending on your expectations for your low frequencies, you may want to consider a pickup with a hotter bass end.

here's what I think.. you should get rid of the HM-2 ..I've had it.. it does not work OK as a booster with modeling amps..honestly it does not work Ok with tube amps neither.. I've tried it with a 5150 some time ago :) it was a beehive and I've had an 80s MIJ version.

the second thing I'd get rid of is the spider.. the thing is, that once you switch over to a good tube amp, you won't be needing more bass and low end, trust me.. what I try to say is, that it's not logical to swap pickups when it's not the biggest problem of your signal chain..

as far as a Flying V is concerned, I'd either get a miracle man or a painkiller.. a warpig with 6505 would be an overkill of low end.. i've had a warpig in a mahogany caparison tuned to B + 5150+mesa cab and it sounded like a 5dolar rig :(
the number 2 choice pickup (maybe number one) concerning the tuning and the amp you'd like to get would be the painkiller..at the time when I switched over to PK and still used to play my 5150, it was one of the best sounds I ever got.. ever :)

Thanks for the reply K Roll.

I wont get rid of the hm-2 in any way :P Simply because you cant get that sound anywhere else :P

I have both the miracle man and the painkiller in other guitars.
The miracle man is too fluffy and the painkiller is too thin sounding for what im after. I need something in between those two.

Im really considering to give the Alnico Nailbomb another go.

Last time i tried i HATED it. It had like this thick layer of mush over it like the amp stood in another room. I was as closed sounding as a nuns welted ####!!. But every time i listen to nolly's clips i jizz a little more, because thats like the coolest of the clip in the contemporary range.

Should i follow my gut and finally get one myself, maybe if i played around it i would start to like it a little more.

I stand between that or the aftermath.

I would like the aftermath because i think that its the one who would retain most of the sound shape through the Hm-2.
On the other hand i think that the A-bomb would sound coolest on its own.

Or or or.. Should i go for a holy diver :S:S Im like a kid in a candystore

Beware of the official clips.

Modellers behave extremely differently with pickups than amps do.

The difference between say the AM & the NB on those clips isnt really that much

but with a real amp the nailbomb is nowhere near as tight or cutting.

I kept on giving it another go and another go

and each time i got more and more dissapointed with it.

I think the AM or the PK would suit what you want more.

have you spoken to Tim?

I think the aftermath could work quite well for you as it has the mid bump but the lows and highs are fairly balanced.

It is a very unforgiving pickup though it highlights mistakes.

Have you considered the Miracle man? it isnt as scooped as people make out and has some good aggression & a lot of cut and is compressed enough to keep everything even

I have spoken to tim a couple of times the last months. And i think im starting to drive him crazy xD im a person with lots of questions, since i like to learn :)
tim has reccomended me; Riff Raff, Black Dog And a nailbomb, since he cant point out the exact pickup im after.

I already have these: Painkiller, Miracle Man, Alnico warpig, ceramic warpig, Hs Cpig 90. + 7 strings.
I have it in a similar guitar to the V. And its too fluffy, and big in the bottom end for my taste for this guitar. I like the painkiller too, but its too thin. What im looking for is a Tight alnico V pickup, with some satuation

Hmm i hate to recommend it but the NB is probably the closest you will get.

I've never really got on with many A5 pickups but there are a few out there.

From my past experience (in Vs) i would personally go for the HD as its one i've never tried

I'd give my left nut for a HM-2.  Love that Stockholm sound.
