New amp day - this one is LOUD
« on: September 09, 2011, 09:08:16 PM »
My Splawn Quickrod has arrived.
Could only give it a short test at low volume.
The tones seem to be all I hoped they were, but the amp is insanely loud.
I hope there's a trick to lower the output a bit, otherwise I'll need an attenuator.

If you need to renovate a wall in your residence, just crank it. Sorted.

And I think it's best to get an attenuator than to fiddle with the tone that you love. Kind of defeats the purpose of the amp for the sake of volume - that's what attenuators are for!

There really isn't. QR loves to be cranked!

You can try the 1/2 power setting on a 2x12; that will diminish the volume a TINY bit.

Enjoy!

Pls post a pic of the head shell.

Nice buy! I'm sure you'll cry just a little bit when you actually get it up to volume. Beautiful amps. I've heard one live only once, but it was one of those tones that actually stuck out as impressive.

NICE
that looks mean as hell! At first I thought that was a photo of a Nitro. have you compared a nitro to the QR?

I hadn't even played a Quickrod before buying one, based on the recommendations of three people I know who own one (but live quite a long way away)
In general I prefer EL34 over 6L6, and I'm an old school guy, so the Quickrod seemed the most logical option.

yeah. a while ago i was tempted by the Nitro, but it's meant to have crazy low end and I prefer EL34's too. Based on what I've heard around here I think the QR would be enough. Do you have to have the footswitch in it to get all the drive out of it?

It comes supplied with the footswitch. Which has a rather strange proprietary cable, so once we start gigging again I may consider buying a spare cable.

cool.
I think I emailed splawn once and asked about how the switching worked and got told I'd need to leave the footswitch in the amp in order to get to one setup, even if i wasn't going to switch anything... I'm sure im not explaining it very well.

With that amp I just built, I think I'm going to steal the OD1/OD2 switch function from the Quick Rod.

Seeing amps like this makes me want to build some 100watt BEAST of a high gain amp, although it's probably just as cheap to buy a splawn. they do seem like serious bang for buck

Hmm you've brought back my major gas for a nitro!

Awesome amp.

Any chance of a few clips?

Once we start rehearsing again, and I'm able to turn it up a bit, I'll see if I can get some halfway decent clips up.
