Best Noise Gate

       Ok so I'm looking for a noise gate pedal that will help quiet my incoming Lee Jackson Metaltronix M-1000 head that i just won on eBay :D  It seems to be a very noisy amp from what i hear.  So I figure I'll need a noise gate.
Let it be known that I have never used a noise gate in the past so it can't be overly complicated. Also would it be better to run it in front of the amp or in the effects loop, or both?

I used to have the Boss NS2 it was alright but it wasnt the best.

I now use a diy MXR smart gate which is a heck of a lot better.


My issues with the NS2 was that it opened and closed quite slowly and also even on max supression it didnt remove all the noise just the majority of it and i actually have a fairly quiet amp.

I did find it a lot better in front of the amp and the loop feature of the pedal itself was great for running noisy OD's and such through.

I do like the Idea of the looping option. anyone have experience with the ISP Decimater pedals? I've heard good things about them too.

The ISP is great if you are playing really modern metal but i find for some stuff it is quite heavy handed with the way it gates which can be really annoying at times.

But the actual noise supression it offers is fantastic.

Would having the pedal set up like this add to its reduction capabilities since its both in front and in the effects loop of the amp?

yes it would.

The way that works is in front of the amp it removes guitar/pedal noise and then the section that goes in the loop removes thermal hiss & general preamp noise that you get with valve amps.

Its pretty clever and a great setup.

The smart gate is a great upgrade from the NS2

With the NS2 it's known to suck tone, but with the MXR, I hear that it only shuts off sound when not playing, which apparantly makes it a true gate, as to the NS2 which supresses the noise at all times. If you follow my drift? Thing is, how would I hook it up to gate both in front, and the fxloop of the amp? Or would it require 2?
