rock is meant to be about sticking it to "the man", and the guitar a symbol of rebellion.. therefore an expensive guitar would seem like a bit of an insult to the rock ideals.

Punk was about sticking it to the man.
Rock was about getting girls/laid ;-)

i think middle class professionals need to rebel a bit themselves

Curious to know what you mean by a middle class professional?

Cheers Ian, it's nice to see I'm not rubbing folk up the wrong way.  I did wonder whether to say what I was buying here on the forum or not, but decided enough folks had met me to know that I'm not some doctor or lawyer with a trophy in need of displaying  ;)

I'm very aware that I'm in a fortunate financial position right now.  I can guarantee that won't always be the case, and not having kids certainly helps with the disposable income thing.

I'd always just assumed you were

Just ribbing you Dave, can't resist  8)

Apparently there is a guitar hidden somewhere in this picture, I can't see it for the life of me

(a) Cheers Ian, it's nice to see I'm not rubbing folk up the wrong way.  I did wonder whether to say what I was buying here on the forum or not, but decided enough folks had met me to know that I'm not some doctor or lawyer with a trophy in need of displaying  ;)

(b) I'm very aware that I'm in a fortunate financial position right now.  I can guarantee that won't always be the case, and not having kids certainly helps with the disposable income thing.

(a) I don't care what you buy (I don't mean that in an uncaring, "I don't give a shiteee about you" kind of way, I mean it doesn't annoy me). if you like it and can afford it, go for it.

I would say, though, that it doesn't much matter to me if lawyers or doctors have good guitars either- are they not allowed to rock out?

regarding the guitar- i'm sure it's killer, it definitely looks badass.

(b) that's a good point. I have a lot of respect for people who get married and/or have kids, and i realise and appreciate that they have a lot more important demands on their money than I do. But at the same time, if they start acting like I'm awful for buying these things, a swift, "No-one forced you to get married and/or have kids" comeback will be forthcoming

it was the same at school or university- (some) people acted like i was awful for having nice things. Now, I'm well aware i was probably handed money more easily than them too (though plenty of their parents were just as rich as mine, if not richer), but they wanted to be able to afford to go drinking every weekend while I didn't. I have no problem what you spend your money on (within reason... obviously contract killers are probably not the most ideal things to spend your money on), but if you choose to spend it on A, don't act like I'm awful if I can afford B if I don't spend it on A.

wow that sounds like more of a rant than it was meant to be. Basically i came in to say, "Nice guitar"

Lots of lyrics in all kinds of rock about freedom and protest. But yeah, its all about the lasses of course.

Well, yes, kind of.......

But.....

What guitars do people in rock bands actually play?

Unless you're talking garage rock, where they'll probably be playing genuinely cheap guitars, they might have modern Ibanez/Jackson/ESP/BC Rich metal guitars (pretty expensive) or, most likely, they'll have Gibsons and Fenders, quite possibly even vintage ones (expensive).

So people following "rock ideals" do play expensive guitars.  Just not ones which look obviously expensive.  Is that PRS' true crime?

I like to think that if I were to walk into a room and see 3 guitars and was unaware of their price I'd still pick the same one.

PRS Private Stock
59 Les Paul
BC Rich Gunslinger Retro

I'll have the BC Rich!  :o

By the sound of it that's what Dave/Twinfan would do with this PRS.

Follow your heart.

I'd have the '59 Les Paul, no question.

Unless it was over eight pounds, in which case (like a runner up on The Weakest Link) I'd leave with nothing.

Realistically, of course, I'd take the LP (hefty or not) and flog it (thereby making an all-too-rare profit!)

Talking of '59 Les Pauls, there's a great article by Tony Bacon in Guitarist this month about what would you do if you had a time machine and cold go back and buy a load of guitars in '59.  The biggest issue being provenance when you come to sell it in 2012.....

bit late to this:

So guitars should be like tools, what a silly thing to say - hmm, has anyone looked at the high end tool market recently

is it wrong of me to want one of these:
http://www.axminster.co.uk/lie-nielsen-lie-nielsen-crosscut-panel-saw-prod811239/

when one of these at 95% less will do the job reasonably well
http://www.diy.com/nav/fix/handtools-storage-workwear/handtools/saws/carpentry_saws/Stanley-Heavy-Duty-Saw-Black-Yellow-9676990

its no different to someone wanting a US custom shop PRS over an SE

now when i want to entertain myself or use up some free time i have the option of going out to my workshop and playing with my tools, or going to my guitars and playing with them.  does it really matter how good i am at one or the other when i am deciding how I want to spend my spare money/time.

maybe we just need to start looking at tools as musical instruments

how about a great bit of musical saw
