Losing my sh!t right now
« on: June 21, 2013, 06:42:38 PM »
Hey guys,

just wanted to post here whilst I'm on a short coffee break. I've got a big exam on Wednesday and I'm kinda freaking out right now. I realized it's much more to learn than I initially thought it would be and I'm having a hard time right now not losing my nerves. Any tipps from fellow students at universities? Why does a day only have 24 hours?  :?

I'm not a student now but I did do a uni degree a few years ago so I feel your pain. I will still wake up in a panic that I have so much work to do and so little time, then remember I finished uni ages ago

My advice is first thing to do is calm down, being in a panic will only make things a bigger problem than they actually are, so do what you have to do to calm down (within reason haha, hangovers are not going to help you).

Prioritize your time, don't cram to the determent of your other exams/essays. Set aside solid time for doing specific things, such as preparing for this exam and stick to it. When you get to the end of that time slot, switch off and move on.

When it comes to information absorption it's actually been proven (somewhere by someone) that you will retain more information and perform better by attentively reading something through once and having an early night rather than overloading your brain with multiple chunks of information and staying up late trying to compensate. Your brain will process the information alot better this way.

Relax and goodluck, I'm sure it will be fine :)

spend hours in the library and don't go out drinking if you want good grades, that's what I didn't do and ended up quitting the degree.

try to spot possible questions that'll come up. you don't necessarily have to learn it all.

obviously it's better practise to learn it all properly (do as i say, not as i do  ) if you hadn't been caught out, but you have, so you need to make the best of a bad situation.

and yeah don't panic. easier said than done, but that'll make it worse, as lew said.

I'm kinda still unsure if I'll have enough time to learn everything, so I'm focusing on the most important stuff.

Why are you on an internet forum?

Well, just had the exam and it went better than expected. To answer your question MDV: I tend to take 5 to 10 minute breaks every 2 hours to rest my brain, including reading through the forum. And I don't have a Facebook account ;)

good for you for not having facebook, I left in 2011 and it's one of the greatest things I've ever done. Hope your exam went well, keep us posted on what grades you get.

Ever since I left Facebook I have more time, less useless information and a stronger connection to my friends. I don't see a point in handing over my personal data in exchange for deprivation of time that could be spent better on other things... like learning for university or doing chromatic exercises on the guitar :P

I never joined it in the first place. I'm all for pointless timewasting, but I can do that already without handing over all my details

Good for you! I got it when I was younger and it was "cool" to be on Facebook. Sometimes I wish I could travel back in time and slap myself in the face

Now I am a little late for the party, but I got one tip that can still help with future exams and will hopefully help me when I start uni in september.

Make cheat sheets. Go ahead do it. Donīt use them though, just write them up. It is a great way to solidify your knowledge by writing it down and previouly distilling it down. You revise everything in you mind, filter out the important stuff and write it down, which all help memorizing things.

That and making a song of it. I think I once remembered some formula with a progressive guitar rythm part...
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid
