Theres many brands which havn't been mentioned.

Find the neck, body wood then body style. Then you can look at pickups colours & stuff.

Then theres the like of vintage and wilkinson who do produce reasionable stuff. Plus a hoarde of japanese makers which are mentioned in many other threads.

Some (mostly) unmentioned brands are

peavey
ibanez (consider the artist range)
hamer (I like their double cuts, but the standard is explorer styled)
gibson (they did some super strat styles in the 80s)
aria (nice neck heels on some models)
Charvels (some good deals out there)
Gordon Smith
Fernandes
Godin
Yamaha
warmoth (put it together yourself)
Lag
Fender

Rob...

Peavey, some DEF. '80s metal axes
Ibanez, sure
Hamer, OMG$$$$$$$$$$$$$ for a 'good' one ;)
Gibson/Charvel Superstrat, cheap enough, if ya can find one
Charvel like Davey's on Evilbay right now uber cheap!
Kramer, long as NOT musicyo
B.C.Rich, pre Bernie Rico's departure/death
Some VERY interesting Jap guitars come up now and again;

And it's a signature model that he only used for a year or so

But more than twice the length of time they where popular.

Ermm regarding the whole metal guitar thing, what actually is a metal guitar so to speak.

So many of them seem to be so close to  40 year old gibson designs (ESP) or slab bodied strat style guitars. Yeah I understand that the necks are often slimmer and have a flatter radius (for the shredders out there). Of course there are the more extreme shapes but for the most part why not go for a decent SG / Explorer or whatever with a new paint job & decent pickups ?

Rob..

Just my 2c and not intended to annoy just a genuine question (even my wolfgang is too metal for me, but I love the neck shape)

I agree... assuming you can get on with the neck profile, you can make any solid-body guitar "metal" if you switch the pickups...

A lot of guys (not sambo, this isn't a dig at you, lol) seem to think your guitar will only sound "metal" if it's a pointy bc rich that's black...

it's a well-known fact that black guitars sound heavier...

well i always used to think that about body SHAPE... some people seemed to think that would make a great difference..

but i never really knew as im not clued in abot woods e.t.c. and how they affect tone...

interesting that you and rob say that though... definately something to bare in mind..

in fact... going by that... surely all id want is something with a nice neck and a decent chunk of wood for a body and thatd do me great?

Many use a Fender strat, i.e. Maiden anyway :)

The white one is a Gibson/Charvel WRC Sam. Bit rare/odd but (at the moment) not overly expensive if ya find one.

My car is/was an Infiniti FX 35. A SUV based on the Nissan Z car, damn I MISS it. Infiniti is the upper end Nissan, kinda like Lexus is to Toyota. So, a. they are not in this country and b.it is left hand drive. But boy I love that car!
Not as silly engine as that supercharged Harley Truck I had, but still it has 280bhp about

Yeah, in fact I'm thinking very hard about getting one myself at the end of the month. They're solidly made, Look gorgeous, have a really fast neck, thru-neck and thru body TOM (great for metal), and cost very little (due to lack of high profile celebrity endorsements). Just need new pickups.
