^ the guitars he had for sale. I'm pretty close to emailing about a custom build, but I might as well see what he has that he wants rid of first, just in case any tickle my fancy.

Don't worry, I won't take the green one. I don't really want a maple neck on a guitar of that style...

I went down that route a while back, emailed many different places with a spec to see what it turned up...If I remember rightly it was a Maple Neck thru with Swamp Ash wings and ebony fretboard, with locking tuners, 24 frets, BKs, all the top quality hardware etc

Prices were as follows (looks back through emails)

Legra - £1320 (£1150 with R/wood board)
www.soundsinscale.com - £995
www.mdguitars.co.uk - £1200
Ran Guitars - 1580 euros
Rek Guitars - 1450 euros

Dunno if that was at all helpful, and I'd probably go for something completely different if I were to enquire again, but it gives an idea of the prices of different places in comparison with each other. Oh, and those weren't the only places asked, just hte only ones that replied :drink:

Rob: I was asking Dave what he emailed Mr Johnson over at Legra about :drink:...but if you've emailed someone lately and want to discuss it, go right ahead :) :lol:

EDIT: good idea about heading to denmark street, rob. denmark street is cr@p on many levels (mainly price), but it does have loads of guitars to try. and you're only about 2 minutes from the soundcontrol under virgin in oxford street, and about 30 seconds from the soho soundhouse on charing cross road. it's a good place to try lots of stuff in a short space of time. and when one shop kicks you out, you can just go to the next (even though a lot are owned by the same people and you might find the same guy working in any of about 4 of them... not at the same time, though. that'd be weird.)

funny thing is though... i did practically all that... when we went to London a few weeks ago... before i was really planning on getting a guitar any time soon... grrr

I am not sure, but there are always use guitars on ebay if you can find one.....

When I bought my Carvin (and still to this very day), it had the lowest action of any guitar I have ever played without buzzing. I posted this on some forums, and a half dozen other Carvin owners responded and said the same thing about theirs. Mine is all the default options, alder body, maple neck, ebony fretboard, H-H, Sperzel locking tuners, coil split switches, etc. and costs around $800usd new, but seriously was a lot better quality than some ESPs and Jacksons that I played in the store next to it that were selling for over three times that new.

Yeah I've always said Les Pauls make great tone guitars... for metal or clean, having more wood and quieter pickups results in a fuller sound than having less wood (and less dense wood) and louder pickups to make up for what the guitar is lacking in wood.

That said, there is a point for lighter guitars too as Les Pauls will give you back problems.

that's what always friggen' happens. as you know, it's a bit harder and more expensive for me to get to london than you- i always get home, and about 3 days later decide I want something which I saw in the shops over there, but didn't try because I wasn't after it then. Or else really muck up, not do my homework, and find out that a convenient-ish shop did stock stuff I wanted to try, only I didn't realise it.

Deg0ey: cheers, man. I've looked into Ran- they seem good value, I guess what I didn't like was the wait- it says at least 28 weeks, maybe more. That's a heck of a long time... you nearly need to be ordering from them before you want the damn thing!

also, some of their choices of hardware aren't all that great (i.e. some things just plain aren't offered), and their stock models are pretty good value, but when you start trying to spec BKP's etc., it brings the price way up...

EDIT: those rek ones look quite nice, but some of the english wouldn't look too out of place on some of those "lucky" chinese auctions on ebay...

in addition to the dodgy english, I'm not sure I like the negotiable price on the rek website... I'd like to think everyone gets treated equally pricewise.

The other thing, if you wish to custom order one, I could have it shipped to me if they wont ship to you and then ship it to you. It should be about $125usd to ship it... it was for the last guitar I shipped to the UK.
