Feline, every permission to be as anorakky as you want! I always use 9s, always D'Addario..no reason for the brand, I just like the pwiddy colours on the ball-ends.
I always use a light-medium Jim Dunlop pick, no heavier than .73mm(my gawsh, I can't believe how anal I'm sounding here). In my earlier days of playing I'd use pick-per-note style and be very heavy-handed, a bit like a raw John McLaughlin...now I sorta brush/sweep-pick more and just let the left hand flit about a bit.
Now, here's the thing too: I find the mastering set-up I use(which is an Ozone preset on the final mix) just has the right amount of simulated tube warmth and compression to allow those legato notes and the lighter right hand to be heard. The lighter touch also seems to be able to emphasise the squawk more.., er, emphatically, when I do dig in the pleccie.
