Hendrix / Brant Bjork Tone.... [Tim! Update!]
« on: April 09, 2005, 12:22:16 PM »
Hi Tim,

I've got this weird old '74 Ovation (electric) with some strange single coils.
It's got a maghony body and a maple 25.5" neck, just like a strat.
I play through a Marshall Plexi.

I'm not too satisfied with the pickups though, I guess Ovation budgeted quite a bit on these guitars here and there.
I'm looking for a 3 piece strat set with a tone simmilar to Hendrix / Brant Bjork, both strat/plexi players.

I really love Hendrix' tone on The Wind Cries Mary / Machine Gun (especially live) and Brant Bjork's tone (I don't know if you're familiar with him, check out a sample from his website here Low Desert Punk) from the Jalamanta album.

What set (or maybe a mix of pickups? An Irish Tour in the bridge for more grit, maybe?) would you reccomend for this application?

Cheers,
Max

P.S: I LOVE my warpigs, you make some killer pickups, man 8)

Just checked out the tones-I think a Mother's Milk set would do the job really well. The bridge is wound hotter for better balance, not as hot as an Irish Tour which I think might be too much but still enough for that kind of tone through a Plexi.

What type of body timber is the guitar?Could you post a pick?

Glad you like the Warpigs-they're reall beasts 8) !!

Wow, what a quick reply Tim, I'm amazed.

The body appears to be maple (I always assumed it to be maghony, my bad).
Here's the guitar from the Ovation Archives

Though mine looks like this, in case you're wondering:

I'm gonna add the middle pickup, but I'm still doubting wether as to get the old ones rewinded, or replace them with cream strat style....

Hope that helps, I always had the Apache set in mind for this kind of stuff, but you know the pickups better than me, so that's why I checked.

Having heard the clips I think the Apaches would be too rounded for that kind of tone whereas the Mother's Milk are a little brighter and with a touch more aggression to them which will work with the maple.

Now that I've analysed my playing and given the pickup posibilities on this guitar some thought, I've descided on the following:

-Mothers Milk in the neck position (after carefully analysing my playing, I realised whenever I picked up any guitar, especially a strat, I only/mostly used the neck pickup and let the Plexi's natural gain do the talking. That Brant Bjork / Hendrix kinda thing).
-No middle pickup (since there wood would need to be routed out, don't wanna go through that trouble)

And now, for the Bridge Pickups, I need some options.
I've been thinking of a P90 in the bridge, for a nice warm, midrangy tone that ain't too bright, kind of like a warmer early Sabbath tone (think Into The Void, I love that guitar tone).
I also like Billy Gibbons' tone alot, and use a Green Machine (Tube Screamer clone) as an overdrive, when playing classic rock stuff.

So I I'm looking for a pickup that comes somewhere in between, though I'm leaning a bit more towards the Sabbath sound, so a P90. Again, Warmth is the key word. Cleans don't have to be crystal clear, but PAF-ish warm, you know? Kinda of like a neck pickup, but in the bridge.

What would you recommend, Tim? Got some cash saved up, so I'm looking into ordering a set REALLY soon

Cheers,
Max

By the way, the clip I posted earlier was played on the neck pickup. So that still makes the choise Mother's Milk, right?

We were dicussing about the Pig-90 sometime ago. A P-90 version of the Warpig. It's not a production model (yet), but we were all very excited about the idea. Tim can make you one, if you want, including the distressed cover.

Yeah, I read about that one. I love my Warpigs, though I'd like something that preforms better under medium gain (like the oldschool Iommi tone). How is the BPK92 P90 pickup, how would it compare?
Also, it would be interesting to hear/read some more on the tonal diffrences between a P90 War Pig, a normal War Pig and the other P90 pickups Tim makes.

[EDITED to make more sense ]
