if yue doing a brown sg, you should go for a dark brown wood with a black scracthplate (cream outline) and cream pickups! kinda like a SRV style sg (that kinda combo of black, brown and cream)
that would be kickass!
especially with humbuckers!

kinda like this:

sawi about lack of pickup rings, knobs etc. ,i did this kinda quickly PDT_032
Beethoven was a Metalhead! \m/

Tell her to make it under your supervision.  A group project

Have you thought of a Firebird rather than an Explorer?  Firebirds kick ass.
Advice worth what you just paid for it.

miracle man (men!!) for this one.

Tim seems to have got just about the right amount of distressing.  I think this wartorn & aged nickel cover effect really works .  at first sight i thought they could do with a little more but the more i look at them the more i think they are perfect for the guitar

Ok - Something I never understood needs to be adressed.

Is it Miracle men, or Miracle mans?

might have a re-think with the finish on the strat.  the korina on the back is damn nice  tone wood but i find the grain texture tends to look a little rough and the colour isnt as consistent as i would like, its making it look slightly patchy.  its probably good enough but i would rather aim a little above the good enough mark (although admittedly slightly below the PRS perfect finish - i dont think that is something i have achieved yet and probably wont till i make my guitars with robots  :P ).

i cant help think the wood might look better with a slightly translucent black over the back just to get a nice even colour with a little wood grain peeking through.

anyway - pretty much decided i will go with that but it makes me wonder if i should do something to the top, maybe a light grey or even burst it

Transparant black sounds good - I don't think I've ever seen a painted spalt top.

Anyone got any examples?

i have seen trans finishes on spalt before - the trick is to do it gently enough that you dont start taking away from the spalt.  we will probably experiment with that and see what happens :D

that will have to be sprayed so the guitar will be finished in a few weeks rather than next week but now is the time to hold back and not rush it - might as well go the extra mile and get something i like more!

Anyway, strats out of my hands for a few weeks so i will post some of my other summer project thats just started

korina body again, this time no fancy top.  Its the explorer pro!

i have purposely left the neck join section a bit oversize because i want to experiment with something i havnt done before.  You may know that i have a dislike of Sg neck joins and explorers have a similar problem.  My plan to get round this is to use a wider and longer neck tenon.  The neck will hopefully extend all the way to the bridge pickup route.  but thats will be decided by my neck blank which is actually an offcut from this;

so the neck will have the same maple/wenge/walnut/wenge/maple laminations and you will see them on the face of the guitar going between the two pickups.  Well we will have to see if the neck blank is actually long enough for that first - if not i will probably end the neck between the two pickups, but will have to see if i think that will look right first... it can always ahve the traditional explorer scratchplate covering it !...... The point is the tenon will be longer than normal and that should increase stability and strength.

fretboard and headplate will be this quite speckly ziracote:

the finish will probably be a nice blood red colour
