13 string super bass (or how not to build a guitar!!)
« on: July 29, 2007, 01:14:01 PM »
http://uk.youtube.com/user/13STRINGS

i dont normally like to  put down anyones efforts to make an instrument but this guy seems so sure he's created something great  that he is trying to sell it for £1000.

so, issues:

laminated knotty pine construction
Duct tape used as clamps
veneer fretboard sitting on a hollow frame!!!!
an unplayable neck!!
26" scale length (not a bass!!!)

strangely the guy has not posted any soundclips - i wonder why.

If by some fluke of nature the pine is able to hold up to the tension required the scale length is far to short for bass strings anyway and they will have the tone of a wet fart!!

I like multistring basses with huge necks but i think there are some very practical reasons why this style of 13 string bass wouldnt work anyway for anything other than tap style playing anyway

I was just reading about this bass yesterday over at project guitar.  I read that he deletes any comments questioning his build from Youtube.

Saw this a while back - His design ideas are so flawed :|

First thing I'd like to say - How awkward would the balance on that be :|

"THE PATH I TAKE IS FOR THE CREATIVE, THE INSPIRED & INSPIRATIONAL. IT IS FOR THOSE WHO DARE TREAD WHERE OTHER'S WOULDN'T, TO CREATE THE UN-CREATED, TO THINK THE UN-THAUGHT!"

he really does think it's pretty great doesnt he...

it's basically a table with strings.

EDIT: wait a sec.... did anyone else pick on something a bit suspect.... there is no sign or mention of the actual routing for the pickup...

theres a control cavity, and a pickup/pickup cavity.... but there seems to be absolutely no connection between the two.... and in fact, there is a screenshot of the control cavity, and its a little hollow about a couple of inches in volume with no routing to the pickup cavity.... !!!!          :?  :?

The Bridge is made of wood - And the high strings have fret buzz - Which is awesome, since he can't change the intonation ;D

nothing wrong with having a wooden bridge - its a  differnt sound but still quite appealing.....  but it needs to be something good like ebony and even then it will get a lot of wear but it can be very pleasing on a bass.  and technically i suppose he doesnt need to worry about intonation on a fretless with no markings

I reckon his next idea is for a 14 string - -that seems to be the way he wants to 'evolve' the guitar

i like crazy experiments  so nothing wrong with that - but if he had actually succeeded in making a workable instrument he should be proud to actually show someone trying to play it

It would be quite fun if it wasnt for all the BS he talks with it

Lets face it though - its not even a a success visually in which case it would be a good wall hanger if not a player!!

Wow. What an utterly pointless instrument.

Like Wez, I'm not exactly convinced by the idea of a laminated fretboard on a hollow frame either - it doesn't immediately bring to mind the phrase 'structural integrity' does it?

As far as the woods he's used go, correct me if I'm wrong, but I didn't think pine was noted for its qualities as a tonewood? Cheap bedroom furniture - yes. Guitars - no.

Also, how the hell would you go about playing it? There's no way it could be played in anything like a conventional manner - you'd either have to tap it or try to play it piano-style, like Jeff Healey.

Will anyone start the bidding at £1000?

Erm, no.

I cxan only say Oh Dear !

From his favoured music, it seems that being an Emo type he didn't do it for the instrument, but for the injurys sustained while building it.

Perhaps he should have started with 4 strings ans worked up to something bigger
