i know what you are saying blue, i do feel a little cruel!!

But the issue here isnt that he has tried to make something and got it a bit wrong - i wouldnt usually mock somebody for that...  The issue is that hes trying to pass it off as something good, and whats worse - he is trying to sell it as a proper instrument!!!!

If he had made this for personal use i would be very supportive to his experiments.  i would offer constructive criticism where i think he had gone wrong and if he listened he would probably end up with something at least playable.

as soon as i put it up for sale he opened himself up for public humiliation, and his attitude doesnt help!!!

Here is a 'sound clip' over a slideshow:

Lets just say there is no way those bass sounds are coming from that bass and leave it at that!!

I am all for extended range basses - still not sure how people play them but there are lots of very talented luthiers experimenting with designs.

here is a nice well made 10 string:

http://www.melodiamusik.com/musical/images/img_w300/Foto_17%20-%2010%20string%20Bass%20Jerzy%20Drozd_w300.jpg

9 is really a more common number:
http://www.veilletteguitars.com/program_generated/blogs/images/veillette/1158847482.jpg

here is a guy that plays 9,11 and 12 string basses and is apparently having a 13 string made (not by this guy though):

So, in theory i must say i am not against the idea of a 13 string bass.... this thing would be just as bad if he had made it as a four string!!!!

One of his 11 strings - Made by Conklin ofc..

And the coolest ever 9 string - Also made by conklin...

Indeed!

Fanned frets are incredibly beautiful though - And really not that difficult to play on - Infact, I find it easier in some ways.

The body shape of the 11 string is really phenomenal - With those beautiful woods it doesn't look so exclusively "black metal" infact - It looks amazing beautiful and ornate.

the maths isnt to bad for fanned frets - you just need to decide what scale length your highest and lowest strings will have and essentially after that you just join the dots!!!

I am put off making owt like that for a while because the hardware cost alone would break the bank!!  but really it wouldnt be that much more difficult to do!!

I wouldn't know where to begin with 11 strings- now 4 or 5 I can cope with. I wonder what the regulars at the Ferret & Paint Tin would make of that.

And it failed to sell.

Even at £400 - He can forget the grand he was asking for.

Ah well, back to the drawing board( perhaps making one rather than using it). I guess the world at large thought that firewood would be cheaper and far more freely available locally.

doesn't he claim that its a neck through?
is that the right technical term for a 50+ birch ply table with strings?
strikes me as weird

no, he is right about that - the peices of wood go right from the tip of eheadstock to the butt of the guitar so it is technically a neck that goes through!

almost like this carl thompson in that respect:
