The acting, from the boy in particular, was very good. I'm not sure which part I found most depressing - the most disturbing part was when he opened the cellar in the big house.

[SPOILERS AHEAD!]

I haven't read the book, and I'm not sure if we were "supposed" to think this or not, but I actually found the relationship between the father and son increasingly distressing.  The father, wanting to protect the boy, saw everything and everyone as a threat, but the boy's instinct was to be more trusting - and most of the time, it seemed he was right.

By the end of the film, it was getting to the point where I didn't actually like the father any more.... it felt like it was time for them to be separated, and the boy was actually better off with the family he met.  So I didn't see the father's death as the tragedy it was meant(?) to be...

I guess I should read the book.

Saw Four Lions the other day, thought it was really good - very funny! Not one to watch if you're easily offended by non-PC stuff though I suppose, seeing as how it's a black comedy about suicide bombers. A recommended watch though.

Watched two very enjoyable films recently

Office Space - Very funny, and accurate of the office style life. At least where I work anyway. Although it seems to lose pace at some points.

Leon - Excellent film. Need I say any more?

Office space is a great film, very Dilbert-like,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UFS06Z0CCpk

Coraline - Good animated film with wonderfully imaginative visuals. Its a kids movie but would be too scary for small ones. I felt the story was a bit lightweight and confused, it felt pieced-together but worth seeing for fans of the genre.

44 Inch Chest - I'm not keen on the whole Mockney thing and this was one I wasn't impressed with. Very stage play-like, most of the action takes place in one room. The acting is good (cracking cast) but little happens. As usual with Mockey stuff, every other word is f**k or c**t. Joanne Whalley is still hot

Nowhere Boy - Biopic about John Lennon's early life. I'm a Beatles fan so would enjoy anything about them and I like this. The main performance from Aaron Johnson was amazing. He has that 'magnetic' element when on screen, you can't look away.

On the TV front, finished Mad Men - Series 3 which was stunningly good.

Thanks for that mini-review!  I'd heard positive things about this film but regarded it with deep suspicion because (dare I say it) I really can't stand the hugely-overrated Ray "Fackin" Winstone.

Sounds like just the kind of film that irritates me, I'll avoid.

Coraline is one of my favourite films actually! And i'm not really into that whole genre at all really.

Glad to hear you liked Nowhere Boy, like yourself, i'm a big Beatles fan and have been looking forward to that film.

Iron Man 2 was good, I actually preferred it to the first one. Needed more Scarlett Johansson in that tight suit though imo :P

yeah, watched all of the second series.   I thought they were mucking about quite a bit, not sure which direction to take it.   1 really awfull singing episode i really didnt enjoy (not like 'once more with feeling' in buffy).    They did do a brilliant episode with time travelling robocop that i found rather moving.  i enjoyed last coule as well.

i have treme to watch but thats it, and i kind of want to save it.... i might start with carnivale again but its dissapointing knowing they rushed the end

I watched Fantastic Mr Fox last night.  Haven't read the book, but the film definitely feels more Wes Anderson than Roald Dahl.  Like most of his films it's rather "slight" but charming, I liked it a lot.  Looks great in HD too!  :D
