i found the end of torchwood completely unnecessary... like it was trying to hard to be dramatic and really had to push to get there.

i wont say what incase people havnt seen it - but you have a potentially very dramatic moment completely ruined by a comedy BBC special effect

then i just felt a bit 'meh' at the end

Saw Bruno on Sunday, still trying to form an opinion. Watched Ali G in da house on tv the other night, and although Bruno has some funnier parts in it Ali G has a better script still

Did they steal the alien out of the Red Dwarf props cupboard?  As far as blokes in an alien costume go, that one was poo.
Advice worth what you just paid for it.

My problem with Bruno is that it tries too hard to be funny and fails. It also feels much more scripted/staged than Borat. For instance the bit where he's interviewing the babies parents I dont think any mother would agree to what they did. IMO Bruno is a much weaker character as well..

Ali G In Da House is SBC's best work I think :)

sort of off topic, I'm just watching the Torchwood Children Of Earth...bloody hell it works as a drama!!!

When I saw this was on for five consecutive nights, I thought, oh bollocks I'll never have the patience for that - but in fact I found it absolutely gripping and didn't miss a second.

And I'm not normally a big fan of Torchwood - usually it's too gimmicky, camp and full of "oooh, it's after 9 o'clock, watch us be rude and sexy" moments.  This one seemed to be much more focused on the actual plot and characters.

Wez mentioned about the dodgy effects... I don't know if it was intentional, but in this series they seemed to have really cut back on the CGI and for me it worked much better.  I know everyone (including people who never watched it) jokes about the wobbly sets and man-in-suit monsters on the old Dr Who, but at least the actors are interacting with something they can actually see.  I think the new Doctor/Torchwood series rely far too much on good-but-not-great CGI, and you know they're just standing in front of a green screen shouting at a balloon on a stick.

i dont mind the dodgy effects for the most part -  it was just the ending bit which i dont want to give away.

haha I cant stand Torchwood, its far too camp and wooden. And the whole "we're a top-secret organisation yet ride around in a van that says Torchwood on the side" is the real deal breaker for me

Gran Torino - Great film, good story line and great acting.
Agreed. It is pure genius.

Indeed. The spitting scene made me laugh out loud. I was also very surprised to find out the girl who played Sue was only 16 when it was filmed  :o

I'm a bit late but just watched Gran Torino, what a great film. Just as good as some of the other classic he's Directed lately, Mystic River, Million Dollar Baby, etc.

I just watched The Happening as it was on sky anytime. Wow. That is quite possibly the worst film I've ever seen  Everything about it is terrible. The acting is especially bad, Zooey Deschanel is awful.

I must get that on my rental list!  I haven't bothered with any of M. Nightie's films since The Village.  He seems to get worse with each film.

i dunno, man, i haven't seen that one but i watched wedding daze (against my better judgement; in my defence, there was nothing else on) the other night and it's on my list of possible worst films ever.

this might have already been mentioned, but has anyone seen priceless? I saw it a week or two ago, and thought it was awesome. I'm a fan of farce, though. :)

All I will say is:

You know a film will be shite when the lead is played by Mark Wahlberg.

That's a pretty good rule of thumb (especially when you think of things like Four Brothers... ), but Boogie Nights is good.

Rock Star was OK too.

Is that the French romcom with lovely Audrey Tautou?

agreed wholeheartedly. In fact, I think I live by a similar rule of thumb. Though that one where he played a sniper was actually pretty good. I probably lowered my expectations, though.

Have you noticed he has two facial expressions? a catch-all negative one covering annoyed/miffed/sad/angry/psychopathic/surprised (pretty much he looks like he doesn't know what's going on) and a smile...

yeah, that's the one. I prefer "farce" to "romcom" as it makes me sound less effeminate. But yeah, it was awesome. audrey tautou has got really thin, though. it's not like she wasn't thin enough before, either.
