I watched the remake of 'The Last House On the Left' and it started with the cell thing, then followed by Dave's cliches (in order) whilst the whole story was based upon the reverse of your second cliche.

Good work Dave!

Hmm, I must watch that I suppose...

I have to say, that's a typical major-studio horror remake - they get a young, promising (i.e. cheap) director, some journeyman scriptwriters... none of them, usually, are true horror fans, so they trot out all the clichés without realising how clichéd they are.  :?

Its really bad. It doesn't make sense. If I had seen the original I think I wouldn't have watched it, and from what reviews I have read, the original seems to be regarded as a better film.
I am assuming you will have seen the original?

I also watched '17 again' a few nights ago, I was particularly sceptical about it due to the lead role, but was pleasantly suprised, it was a happy teen romantic film. Even if some of the comments were totally devoid of control, and was just painfully obvious to the storyline.

I would rather you watch that one Philly. It's just that tiny bit better.

  Thanks Will, but I don't think I can watch 17 Again.  I don't do romance films, I don't do teen films.... I just can't watch that!

Yes, I have seen the original Last House.... it's not an amazing film, but it's effective.  It's nasty, the actors are unattractive, it looks gritty and grimy and very much of its time .... and in a way, it feels real.  There's no way a modern big-studio remake was ever going to work, because new Hollywood films just aren't cheap enough.  It was bound to end up as just a glossy, superficial revenge movie.

nice work too, philly, i missed the bit in will's post where he said it was based on the reverse of your second cliche

I'm not sure about the horror fans thing, though, philly- I'm not a horror fan at all and i can spot the cliches a mile off. Sometimes the fans are willing to ignore the cliches (i know i am in the stuff i like)... :)

yeah, in addition to being a wuss, the blatant continuity errors/ridiculous suspensions of disbelief required kinda get to me with a lot of horror storylines.

"Let's split up so the psycho can bump us off one by one!"

"Right, we've knocked the baddy/psycho over, instead of nicking his gun/machete/weapon and rendering him useless and thus ending the film an hour too early, let's just run away instead"

"Hmmm, this sounds fishy and possibly extremely dangerous, let's not call the cops and instead investigate ourselves without telling anyone where we are and without bringing any weapons to defend ourselves with"

etc. etc.

That's just brilliant, Dave!!! Spot on!

Yeah, but you're not stupid like a Hollywood scriptwriter or director!  Don't forget they're probably off their faces on mountains of coke shouting "yeah, yeah, this is $%&#in' great man!" at each other.

But yes, I am willing to ignore the clichés to an extent... horror's such a narrow genre in some way, it's almost like a game with a set of rules which you have to stick to.... but it's how well you play the game that counts.

It's interesting because it's a genre with a very dedicated fanbase, so the films can be made relatively cheaply and still turn a profit.  So at one end you get horror fan-boys picking up good distribution for a film that they shot in their local woods with money borrowed from their parents... and on the other end you get the big studios quickly knocking out bad remakes of '80s slasher movies, starring good-looking kids from TV teen dramas.  And we watch all of them, even the ones we know are going to be shite.

I go to FrightFest every year (over August bank holiday) and we sit there and watch 25-30 (mainly) horror movies over 5 days.  It's hard to explain, but you can just "feel" when the director understands his audience and knows when to play by the rules, when to bend them in an imaginative way.  You can also feel when it's just some hack going through the motions when he'd rather be directing a rom-com.  All the best horror directors are also fans - they come along to introduce their films and they're people exactly like us!

^ haha, thanks :D Agreed about how you play the game though, and that the best directors will be fans. :)

thanks :D I had a think about this, because I'm willing to suspend my disbelief for plenty of other styles of films. I think the reason why I'm unwilling to do so for horror is that they make people stupider than they'd be in real life- I have no problem suspending my disbelief for something like james bond, where he's better than someone in real life would be, but not too keen on doing it where, for the premise to work, you have to assume that all the characters are morons.

I finally made it to a cinema and watched "Moon" last night.  I thought it was great, especially Sam Rockwell who pretty much is the film as far as focal points go - an amazing performance to carry the film like that.  I loved the design of the film too, the sets, vehicles and costumes were really timeless which is a hard thing to manage.  It felt like those sci-fi films of the 70s like "Silent Running", "Dark Star" and the daddy of the lot, "Alien" which, to me, is a very high compliment indeed.  I think it looked really good at the cinema but, if you miss it there, it would certainly be worth catching on DVD.

I've not read this thread yet but after reading the CGI thread I can see the forums taste in film is great ... and thus I'm suggesting the Sam Raimis movie Crimewave, co written by the Coen brothers.

i thought chaos was alright, tom, but i agree about the accent. I'm not sure what he was doing, at times it was like he was vaguely putting on an american accent, at other times, he just wasn't bothering.
