Closer inspection reveals a skinny nut width, plus a six digit serial (not 5 digit as advertised).  I reckon it's a '65 not a '62.

How does it play?

It plays great!  The thinner width nut means it's slightly cramped compared to my usual guitars, but it's slick as a slick thing and feels great.  Nice and vibrant, you can feel the body vibrate when you play.  Pickups are OK, but lacking in some 'zing'.

It's been rewired very professionally with top spec CTS pots and orange drop caps, plus a Switchcraft jack.  Exactly what I was going to use, so that's pretty cool!

Just about to pull the pickups and see what the routes are like.

Just out of curiosity, what's the serial number?  My Melody Maker's 260007.

The serial number is "509242" I think, although the last number is very hard to read.

According to this site:  http://home.provide.net/~cfh/gibson.html#serial that makes it a '65 or a '68, and given that it has the small scratchplate (not the batwing, or evidence of ever having one) it must be a '65.  The pickup routes are fine except for some extra home-done style expansion of the pickup leg areas.  To accommodate some different 'buckers at some point I think.

Neck breaks are overrated. It didn't change anything on my Hamer Sunburst. As long as it's been glued well and even more so if the break is behind the nut. As long as it holds and transfers the vibrations it will make no difference.

Like most guitars around this era the serial numbers can seem to be confusing. Is the last number definitely part of the serial - presumably (using the info on the site) if you assumed it was a 5 figure serial, it would date it as a 62. But as you have mentioned the narrow nut width it does seem to point to 65.

With my SG unfortunately I 'erased' the serial when I refinished it but did write it down somewhere - unfortunately I can't find it a the moment but remember it was a 5 figure number beginning with 6 which confirms it as a 64 - the neck is also much chunkier than my 61 reissue.

The 3rd and 4th digits line up exactly with the middle of the headstock, so I'm sure it's a six figure number.  Plus the thinnner nut, makes it a '65 to me.

I'm thinking I'm going to keep it and throw on the best hardware I can get hold of.  Then play the snot out of it at 'DC gigs!

I think TonePros everything should do the trick?  Tuners, ABR-1 bridge and posts, plus a tailpiece and posts.

Or what about Pigtail?  Any other makes I should look at?

DMC and Fake58 - stay away from Pigtail, heard lots of horror stories about people ordering, never getting anything and the guy wouldn't respond to emails.

I've personally dealt with Fake58 and they were very fast in getting the goods out (AND they're a UK company).
