Looks - PHENOMENAL!

Wonder how it would have looked like with the Bochote board now - I think that rosewood is gorgeous.

it kinda makes me glad the bocote neck didnt work out - this is a great neck so far!

although i am in the process of saving the bocote and zebrano  for use on a explorer pro shaped thing i reckon.  It will just be a plain korina body so will suit the carzy neck wood a bit better.  I have wanted to do a smaller explorer for a while so it makes sense

that is awesome! very nice inlay on the headstock, and just generally looks sweet.

what happened to the bocote board? i must have missed that, somehow...

back on page 9 i had problems with glueing the bocote and zebrano due to the oilyness of the bocote.  Its something i can sort out but decided to go with a 1 piece indian rosewood neck instead - which i think was the right choice for this guitar.

the bocote and zebrano neck will soon feature on another guitar, tis an easy fix!!

this mornings first job was to get some more oil on the neck after the initial coat last night.

This time the oil is applied whilst wetsanding the entire neck with finishing paper.  I went up to about 1500grit wet &dry paper then switched to micromesh paper going up to 12000grit.  tbh you can just take it to around 1000grit then switch to 0000 wire wool and wax but i get carried away sometimes.  the danish oil is constantly added to the paper as you go and all residue is buffed off between grits.

here is where it stands now!!!

the problem with oil finishes is that they wear through relatively fast so this will get a couple of coats of wax to protect it but even so it wont stay this shiny on its own.  The neck will probably need 1 re-oil/wax as well as regular buffing in its first year and whenever it needs it after that.  With regular playing and buffing a patina as nice as this will build up and it will need less treatment and shouldnt dry out.  A fair bit extra maintenance but its worth it!!

could you not do a satin lacquer finish?
They do slow after a while but if you polish it some lemon oil and then some beeswax polish you would not believe the smoothness you get.
I too use chicken as a measurement.

i could but nothing beats the feel of natural wood, well worth the little bit of extra work that may be needed once a year at most . . .  and believe me - i have played enough necks to know that this will be smoother and will age much nicer than any style of lacquered neck if treated properly

i have installed the frets:

the next job is to fill all the fret ends with rosewood filler then i can file back the fret ends.

I may have a bit more work to do on the finish after that but the neck is essentially done untill the body is finished!!

The inlay really works!

Looks superb Wez - it's good that the frets didn't destroy it - That inlay really looks cool.
