I wanted to rip my ears off and bury them deep underground so that I don't ever have to listen to this cr@p ever again.

"cookie Monster" style vocal

That is THE BEST comparison I have ever heard, hands down, and now I think about it, I can actually imagine the Cookie Monster singing death metal! (It's Photoshop time!)

But haven't you heard? He's actually been put on a diet, and says that "Cookies are a sometimes food". Friggin political correctness!  :x :x :x

I heard Merzbow on Radio4 a few years back, at first it was awful but I really got into it, it allows you to get into a kind of meditative state. Really, it does. I think because is becomes so encompassing and effectively blocks the parts of your brain used for listening that other parts of your mind increase in activity.
A lot of his music does have rhythm in the static. But you need to listen to it for a long time (at least 20 minutes) before you have a chance to get it.

 Gosh that sounds pretentious :)

It's not music. It's a kind of audio art, but like much modern art a lot of people don't like it. I went to the Tate Modern and saw a piece of painted rope nailed to a plank of wood. Whats that all about?

As a postscript I bought one of his CDs and I think I listened to it once

All the evidence you need: Cookie Monster

I could only stand about 30 seconds at most of some of these bands
Just so not my thing - some good guitar playing in some - but the vocals kill me.
WASP, Rammstein, Judas Priest no problem at all
And I seem to thrive on Geoff Tate and all that "screechy bollox" that others dont like - all a matter of personal taste.

Yeah thats the thing about modern metal I hate. Pretty good riffs and music in general, but always let down by the vocals. I cant listen to songs with bad vocals, it just ruins it no matter how good the music is. It just seems like they get someone who can growl and think "that'll do".

But anyway, this threads more about random noises, not modern metal ;) I downloaded a few Merzbow songs just to see if it was any better recorded - the ones I found didnt seem to have a rhythm and I definitely didnt feel any different other than slight annoyance at the sounds

just to flit ever so gently off topic... isn't Feline's latest avatar great?  i think he should get a prize!

on cookie monster vocals, like most things, they can work sometimes, but they are hard to take seriously.  i think Mike Patton's my favourite cookie monster, but of course he can sing like a (rabid) angel as well

The cookie monster vocal works great when used appropriatley.

Would any other vocal style work in Deicide or Cannibal Corpse? I don't imagine so.

On topic. To understate. I don't like that.

ahhhhh pretentious noise art "elitism"

I've even heard stories about how some guy set up some cr@p just using feedback and annoying noises having no idea what he was "meant" to be doing cause he was just taking the piss really, and got referred to as a genius by these people who seem to think it's all an incredibley elaborate metaphor.

On a side note, agree with blue: Feline your avatar's rule    definately getting a custom from you as soon as I can afford it.

dunno...

i HATED death metal vocals for a long time... then they kinda grew on me... now i love em. unless they're total cr@p that is

the cookie monster vids are hilarious... and those vocals are shitety (at least in the tnt vid .. too forced sounding)
the 2nd vid is arch enemy... when i first heard them i didnt know it was a chick on the vocals.

I do understand what you mean, but the nearest I want to get to that kind of feeling is listening to Sleep's Dopesmoker.

As for the death metal vocals, I love Opeth and I quite like Arch Enemy and Soilwork, because there's enough melodic stuff for me to latch onto, but I still suffer through the cookie monster vocal parts.  I just don't see the point of singing like that - lots of people like it, so it's obviously my problem, I just don't get it.

I really struggle when the vocals are combined with that blastbeat drumming style - just can't listen to it.  I need a groove, not a machine-gun assault. It's obvious some of the bands have talent, but it's just not for me.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Ok, so I finally realised the good thing about noise - listen to it loud through headphones then turn it off - it makes everything seem so quiet and peaceful

What a pointless genre!
